Good post.
Conference championships have to matter. If there is up problem with a respresentative of want conference then that league should look at the way they are determining their champion.
Top 4 division winners is simple enough, exclusive enough, and has some small wiggle room for subjectivity. It allows teams to schedule that big non conference game to show their mettle while knowing that a loss does not completely kill them.
Conferences aren't equal. So what. By using division winners as a minimum instead of just conference winners this is mitigated.
So if Georgia or Wisconsin or Washington win the weaker division maybe that doesn't hold as much weight as an Alabama or Ohio State or USC. Ok. Then you still have the opportunity to put that runner up Alabama team in over a conference champ 2 loss Washington team.
Notre Dame must share a spot with the ACC.
Scenario
12-0 Wisconsin beats 11-1 OHio state for B1G champ
11-1 Georgia beats 12-0 Alabama for SEC champ
11-1 Clemson beats 9-3 Miami for ACC champ
10-2 TCU beats 11-1 Oklahoma for B12 champ
Notre Dame goes 10-2
Final rankings
1. Georgia 12-1. Seeded
2. Wisconsin 13-0 seeded
3.Clemson 11-1 seeded
4. Penn state 11-1
5. Alabama 12-1 seeded
6. TCU 11-2
7. OHio State 11-2
8. Oklahoma 11-2
9. Notre Dame 10-2
10. Auburn 10-2
I would argue that this is fair. What has been the most unfair part is a team not even playing in the conf champ game and getting a bid. You need to play that final weekend to be eligible and then you need to be too 4 after that weekend.

I just think auto qualifiers would lead to some dumb situation where a 3-loss division winner beats an undefeated division winner who had a better body of work in the end. But, at least we know the parameters of how you qualify ahead of time.
Also, just deciding division winner could be a cluster some years in order to determine who even goes to the conference championship game. Weren't Texas/Oklahoma/Tech all like 11-1 the year Crabtree stunned Texas? I guess it's on the conference to sort that out, but I don't think I'd mind having the committee decide who was the best team in the end once the CCG is played.

But if you know the rules what’s the issue?
