Chess Boxing.
If you're dumb, you'll get beat on the board quick. If you're not athletic you'll get knocked out.

Football is the toughest mentally and physically.

soccer requires a ton of mental work
Probably the biggest range
Players like Evans, Lampard, and Bradley could do anything
Players like Scholes and Pirlo should have the mental ability to do anything
Others, LOL, deal with it

These guys are fricking brilliant.
Unfortunately, Rooney negates any intellect in the world of soccer.

Anybody putting basketball last has never played above the bitty ball level. To me it all depends on positions. Of course being a QB requires smarts but being a defensive end does not. Being a good catcher requires smarts while being a right fielder does not. Basketball is different. You need to know what everybody is doing at all times. Anybody that thinks you just learn one position and run out on the floor doesn't have a clue. I'd say the smartest position in sports is a QB but you have to be smarter to play any position in basketball than any other football position. Besides catcher and pitcher there really isn't much more than common sense going on in baseball.

The one thing I learned from this thread is that not a lot of people play baseball anymore.
In football, a less athletic, but highly efficient team will beat a more athletic but less efficient team maybe two times out of ten.
In baseball, it's lot more even. The less athletic but more efficient team will win more than half the time, in my opinion (given even pitching).
Of course, if you had a "Nuke" LaLoosh on the mound, all bets are off, because a retard who could throw 100mph strikes and had a good slider could beat a team of nuclear physicists with a cumulative BA of .350 8 times out of ten.

if it boils down to pure athleticism your argument has a point, b/c baseball isn't a sport based in athleticism
"talent" in baseball is typically more skill (esp outside of pitching) developing skill doesn't mean you are smarter

The sports with the most information to process in the least amount of time for each activity require the most mental agility. The sports that require you to maintain this for a longer period of time require more from the participants.
You also have to consider which sports have the most involvement from their coaches IN GAME. The teams with little involvement from the coaching staffs in game are the ones that require the players to think and to adjust the most, which of course requires more mental agility.
Just a few thoughts.

football...playbooks, and QB is arguably the most difficult position as well (with not only playbook knowledge, game situation awareness, have to know what everyone is doing, etc.)

The QB in football is definitely WAY above everyone else. He has to process a very complex defensive scheme and figure out who will be open within a few seconds. He has to do this knowing that he will get smashed at any moment.
Mark "The Bird" Fidrich had one of the greatest single seasons EVER as a pitcher and was mentally retarded!
