You could argue for USC over OU, which I think would have been a tougher game for LSU, but that’s just the flawed BCS. The same system that screwed us out of a title - cuts both ways.

I believe Spurrier was one of the coaches who voted USC #1.

They also beat Auburn 23-0 the first week of that season.

All this hand wringing and you can bet your arse if the roles were reversed LSU fans would also be claiming the AP title.

Let's say the Bama/LSU rematch was a much closer game and the AP kept LSU #1. Do you really think y'all wouldn't claim it?

No, though we would have a much stronger argument than USC in 2003.

First off, if the situation were reversed, and LSU had been the top ranked team in both polls heading into bowl season, then absolutely walloped the fourth ranked team in the country, there’s not a LSU fan on earth who wouldn’t claim they were deserving of a share of the title.

Just that they were already #1 is not an answer. What measurement can you point to at the end of the season that would indicate USC deserved a share of the national title? Why is this so difficult for people to do?

I’ll tell you why, it’s because there is nothing you can point to in order to support that ranking. Not best wins, not best loss, not SoS, not anything. Doesn’t that say something?

I think if LSU was #1 and got left out of the championship game and won our bowl game, Tiger fans would've wanted the same thing.

All that being said, frick USC

Sure. That’s not the question though.

They were better. Every non-lsu Homer knew they were the best team.

Nah. 17 AP voters cast their votes for LSU as #1. Any reasonable person would pick the team that had victories over 5 top 20 teams (3 top 10, 2 top 5) vs the team that had victories over 3 top 20 teams though they were all top 10 and 1 top 5. LSU had the #2 SOS in 2003, USC the #17.

The case to be made is that USC should have been the opponent that LSU beat in the championship game. That I could get behind.

there is at least *a* case, but even that case isn’t all that strong. Oklahoma had much better wins and a much better SOS, and in top of that their loss was to a better team.

No, even though Bama was undeserving of a mulligan since they couldn't even win the SEC West. It would be a point of mockery every year leading up to the Bama game.

You self claimed a fake basketball title, you absolutely would claim 2011 for football if the AP kept LSU #1.

What fake basketball title is LSU claiming? Because I’ve never heard of LSU claiming a men’s basketball title
