What I don't get is, why must he grandstand dUKe everytime they hand him a mic and put a camera in his face? I mean he is doing the color for the game featuring the #1 team and he can't wait to throw around dUKe's name.

I heard him say this today and lol'd.One of the reasons he breathlessy spat out the rivalry being best was that "There's more at stake" than UM/OSU.....REALLY DICK?

Last I checked ncaab has a 68 team tourney,at which both of these teams typically have a good seeding to make a run-regardless of the regular season's outcome.

This years mulligan bowl notwithstanding, cfb rivals can effectively knock each other out of bcs consideration.

I'm not saying it's not one of the great rivalries,I just think Vitale views everything through the prism of bb,and his logic is flawed on this one.

Are you referring to the State "glory" years?

Hahahaha ... State will never be as big of a basketball rival as Duke.

Maybe for like a year after State won the NC. The rivalry became what it is in 1961 when Larry Brown and Art Heyman got into a fight during a game.

This whole thread being based off what Dickie V said is retarded. He is a college hoops maniac, so surely his opinion will be in that area.

Seeing as how the game is tomorrow, of course he is going to promote it.

What is he going to say, "Well, Duke/UNC is big, but it's not as awesome-with-a-capital-A as Ohio State/Michigan in football, or Yankees/Red Sox, or Cowboys/Redskins. But you should tune in anyway, because it's sure to be a great game!"

are we talking all sports? in the whole word or just america?

because if we're saying the whole world, then I nominate The Old Firm rivalry between Celtic FC and Rangers FC.

Wake up...the winning team of the last 3 Iron Bowls have been the winning team of the last 3 National Championships. College Football is the most attended and most watched sport in the country...hello! Does Ohio U vs. Ohio State compare?

I still don't think its the biggest rivalry in sports. Definitely, without a doubt, the biggest rivalry in college basketball.

It's not old enough to qualify for that title. Duke used to be really bad at basketball.

In their past 76 meetings the scores have totaled to be:

Duke - 5943
UNC - 5941

I think it at least deserves to be under consideration

Thank you and some of the others for mentioning rivalries across the pond. They've been around longer, there's more bad blood, and definitely much more blood seen when some of those fan bases come together.

I'm not sure how I come down on this statement. Before I came to Duke I probably would have downplayed the Duke/UNC rivalry too. Having seen the way it pervades the entire Triangle, though, it seems feasible. And it certainly extends beyond basketball. Everyone knows Duke football is atrocious and there's not a lot to get excited about. That being said, I've never heard the student section cheer louder than when a score was announced that had UNC losing.

And for what it's worth, my good friend is an Auburn alum and he said Duke/UNC in Cameron Indoor rivals (and possibly even exceeds) every Iron Bowl he's attended. He says the intensity and tension is palpable. But I don't give a shite, screw Duke
