Unofficially official: Kentucky to get NASCAR date

Press conference about 45 minutes ago from Atlanta Motor Speedway announced that AMS will only host one race (Labor Day weekend night race) in 2011. Though no official announcement of where the spring Atlanta date will end up, all signs point to it going to Kentucky Motor Speedway.

Take one from Pocono or California

what ever happened to new orleans east getting a track?

Just a guess but it's probably dead. Like 5 years ago everybody was rumored to be getting a track. There are too many NASCAR tracks now as it is IMO.

that is fricking terrible. Atlanta is the best track on the circuit.

Nationwide/Truck Series races don't generate the revenue to keep a track running. Memphis came off the NNS/NCWTS schedule after 2009. They announced earlier this week that Gateway isn't going to have either series back in 2011.

Wow.
I wonder how long the new track in Newton Iowa will survive if they don't secure a Cup date, which I don't think they can - not good enough facilities. Although Rusty helped at least design the track, so he may be able to put in a good word.

I remember the talk really died after Jazzland couldn't be supported financially.
I think a racetrack in the New Orleans East, Hammond or LePlace area would awesome.
Think about it, you are from Mobile, Ark., Houston or North Louisiana, which city do you want to visit, Dallas, Talladega or New Orleans?

It is the tracks that had to rely soley on Nationwide and trucks to headline the racing season that are hurt the most, especially when NASCAR is contemplating rule changes to limit the number of times a Cup driver can drive in a NNS race. Take the Harvicks, Busches, Burtons, Edwardses out of a standalone NNS race and what draw do you have then? It would be great to return the series to more of a lower cost developmental series as it was once supposed to be, but from a financial standpoint who knows if it can be a viable measure?

I'm so pissed! I enjoyed going to both races in Atlanta. At least they didn't take the night race away.

Other than being here, I don't mind losing Atlanta, but Fontana would have been my choice.
Atlanta is a cookie cutter course, and sadly KY is just another 1.5 mile oval.

Fontana may still lose a date. SMI (Bruton Smith) owns Atlanta and Kentucky, so in order to get a race up there he had to lose the one down here.
ISC (France family) owns Fontana and also Kansas (wants a 2nd date) so they may sacrifice the 2nd Cali race to go twice to KC area.
