Final major of the year. Time for some honey deuces, lobster rolls, and ridiculous night sessions. Let's do this.
Men's Draw.
Anisimova out because her pops died.

Do people think Novak is going to win?

I'd be pretty surprised if it's not a Rafa/Novak final. I think Novak was just a little tired in Cincy, but there may be some arm issues. Rafa's biggest concern is the knees on the hardcourts.

I was hoping Stevie would be a good value against NIck, but no such luck. Only +184.

Just at Felix/Denis. Denis looks really good in North Carolina now. I'd bet him, even though Felix seems mentally stronger and I think was better most of the year.

Tsetse/Rublev is a cracker first round. Fritz/Lopez, Fognini/Opelka, Jo Willie/Tennys, and Monf/Ramos-Vinolas are all very competitive and at least mildly compelling for R128. And, of course, Serena/Masha.

I’d take novak but he got a pretty rough draw. Federer looks to not be in good form. Nadal seems to be playing well as of late. Always the most difficult slam to predict the last few years.

The big stork Kevin Anderson just withdrew from Novak’s quarter.

Thiem has been sick for a couple weeks. Can’t believe he would say this before a slam.

I'm feeling better, physically not nearly at 100%, but I will play on Tuesday for sure. Whether it will be successful or not, I don't know.

Fabbiano plays very solid from the baseline, but I will try to shorten points because I don't think I'll get through long rallies physically. I will try to play aggressive and go straight to the point.

Nice. I'm hoping for a blockbuster Friday night one year when they hold the semis. Last year was a bit of a downer.

Do you know that the last time all three members of the Big Three made the semifinals of the US Open was back in 2011? It's more likely than not that one of the Big 3 will end up losing before the semis.

This is a dumb statement/argument/stat, and you will soon see why.

quote:

This is technically true, but not for the reason that you think. Based on the odds, there's about a 27% chance that all 3 make the semis this particular year, although I feel it's higher personally.

Shall we go over every year since 2012? Sure why not.

2012: On August 15th, Rafael Nadal withdrew from the US Open. Somehow the Big 3 did not make the semis this year. Hmm, I wonder why.

2013: Nadal and Federer are both placed in Quarter 4. Miraculously, only one of them emerges from that quarter to make the semis. Interesting.

2014: On August 18th, Rafael Nadal announces his withdrawal from the US Open. As luck would have it, he did not reach the semifinals that year.

2015: Novak and Rafa are placed in Quarter 1 together. In a crazy turn of events, somehow both players did not win this quarter.

2016: After knee surgery in February, Roger Federer misses the US Open. To the surprise of everyone, he also misses the semifinals that year. Damn.

2017: On July 26 Novak Djokovic confirmed he will miss the US Open with an elbow injury. He was oh so close to making the semis, but it was just not to be.

2018: The damn draw placed both Roger and Novak into Quarter 4. Was this the year that the magic would happen and both would make the semis? Unfortunately, nope.

So, going back to 2012, every year there's been a 0% chance of the Big 3 making the semis BEFORE THE TOURNEY EVEN STARTED.

If I wanted to spin your argument another way, since 2011, in the times where the Big 3 were split in a way that allowed them all to reach the semis, they have done so 100% of the time.

How about instead of going for some "gotcha" moment... try thinking about the meaning behind the stats you are posting.

I’m very motivated for Serena vs Sharapova tonight. What a match to start The Open! I hope Serena is ready to go tonight because Sharapova will always be dangerous regardless of injuries or how shabby she’s been playing Slams.
For the men I’m pulling for The King Of Clay to get #19 and if Rafa can’t, I’d like to see Fed get #21.
