Aga Radwanska. I used to never think she was that hot, but her body is so tight in the Sports Illustrated pic(s) where she is basically naked. I don't think I can even post them here due to handbras and whatnot. We have discussed her hot Euro hooker look on here before.

Lucas Pouille going down is the only notable upset of day 1.

That was about 90% due to injury too, and he still almost pulled it out.

Radwanska is sneaky hot if you are into skinny. Her blonde sister isn't bad either.

Lot of chatter about the outer courts being a lot faster, though there is some disagreement about the show courts. Early indications and scores seem to back this up. If this is true, I would expect the Radwanska, Federer, Serena, Goffin types to benefit. Anyone who sets up shop near or inside the baseline, takes the ball early, and dictates the point. That's what Peng did to Kasatkina last night. Guys like Stan, Rafa, and Thiem I would expect to struggle a bit. I'll research this more when I get back tonight.

Murray was thrown off because he said it was cool last week during practice, now the ball is flying a bit in the heat. Also, I caught this post on another board:
quote:

AO plexi-cushion may not be fast, but I heard something interesting about the balls. One of the commentators said the new AO balls by Wilson are harder and faster, maintain the pressure surprisingly well after many games and the felt is very durable. So, on a hot day session, the balls will travel fast and lively, giving players like Nadal a good chance to put real spin onto them and make them fly all over the places. He also said that because the balls jump off the string very quickly, it was harder to control them or something to that effect.

I heard either that conversation, or a different one about the same topic. It took Stan almost 2 full sets to stop juicing the ball a foot or two long, and they were blaming the new balls. Wilsons are notoriously low-bouncing, at least in the past.

Strange that they would adjust the courts and balls all at once.

So are they trying to make the courts different again?

Yes I complain how they've made the game basically homogeneous and taken styles of play out of play.

I have no idea if they tweaked the courts. What cracka is saying seems to happen a lot at majors -- the outer courts usually play differently -- often quicker than the show courts. Changing the ball complicates the analysis of court speed.

It's an interesting topic because for the health of players and maintaining the interest of viewers (do we need five hour matches?), I believe courts need to be sped up. But, I have also read that tournaments love how 25 shot rallies come off on TV. Racquet and especially string technology are playing into all this. I would ban poly strings if I was god emperor, but not sure how you could police it.

Solid post. You can't make everyone (and sometimes anyone) happy.

Zverev down 2 sets to 1, and a break in the 4th. Plays way back, likes the ball high, hits a lot of topspin. Could be some truth to this fast court stuff.

It's going to be interesting to see what the forecasted 20 degree weather change will do to the balls and court.
