Pettis never did any damage to Guida and was never close to finishing him. The armbar looked a little dangerous but he was not going to finish him with that. What is your point again?

physically injure the opponent with the sub attempt then it means nothing. It does zero damage and it is a complete failure.

same can be said for takedowns

Wrong! A takedown is a successful execution of fighting technique. Clay attempted to take down a resisting opponent and succeeded multiple times. You want to reward a failure more than a success and it is just does not work that way.

I definitely think Guida won the fight, my position is that more needs to be done to press the action. Guida by no means is in the same category as Fitch or Maynard, but this LnP shite for 15 min has got to stop.

Guida took him down at will and pressured him against the fence almost the entire fight. He forced him to fight in a phone booth and Pettis could not win that way. Ricky Story did the same thing to Thiago Alves in the last UFC. It was smart strategy and he won the fight easily by using it effectively.

When you are fighting at the highest levels everyone is very good defensively. It is easy to ask for someone to press the action but harder to do. Guida had sensational fights against Roger Huerta, Tyson Griffin and Diego Sanchez because they are all wrestlers that he could not control. His fights with Griffin and Huerta had some of the most amazing scrambles you will ever seen in an MMA fight. This was just poor matchmaking by the UFC and nothing more.

It's good to see you off your Kendrick Perkins hate at least. Taking up for Guida instead

not arguing that

what I'm saying is that this is MMA, not wrestling....taking someone down and laying on them shouldn't be rewarded in this sport IMO

It would be like blaming someone that is better than Kendrick Perkins for making him look bad. It just does not make any sense.

And wrestling is the oldest martial art. If you can't stop it you lose. What is your point again?

Wrestling is the most dominate martial arts base on earth and it won against a weaker opponent yet again. You need to get over your wrestling hatred or stop watching MMA. There are only more of these guys coming into the sport and they are going to take it over completely.

Oh since it hasn't been mentioned...

Much respect for Najim coming out to Matisyahu while holding the Palestinian flag. It might have been over some people's heads, but that was a pretty bold statement.

Edit: Just saw where UF made mention of it. It got lost in the Guida sucks comments.

yeah, laying on top of someone is way more dominate that punching in the face numerous times.....Pettis wasn't even hurt....

I love good watching good wrestlers....when they use their skills to advance position, GnP, and try to finish fights, not when they just hold someone on the ground

Guida could not advance his position because Pettis had good defense. However he could not wrestle and lost the fight soundly because of it. In his fight with Ben Henderson he got better at stopping Henderson's wrestling attacks as the fight went on. Guida has better conditioning than Henderson and he could not hold him off. Guida is just a physical animal who won't be deterred from doing what he wants to in the cage.

I don't hate wrestling, I just hate wrestlers who don't evolve.
I do agree with you though, wrestling is probably the absolute best base to have when entering MMA. It is most definitely something you either better know how to successfully do or know how to successfully defend
