Yeah, I hear you. I don't want to be "that guy." I've just been hearing about it and it was on my mind so I figured I'd learn a little more about it.

Your son can play travel ball and you won't be "that guy" if you just let him play and if he enjoys it. Yes, we have witnessed some drama, but that shite happens in any league.

Been in travel ball for 4 years, played Dixie Youth (rec) before travel. Son loves travel ball and if done right it's really a blast!! I spent 17 years as a coach in rec the last 4 coaching travel ball and the drama is the same in both! It's youth sports, parents be crazy!!
OP: my opinion 6 is too young. We started part time at 9, left rec at 10. It was plenty early enough! Don't be in a hurry! Let him have FUN!!

I've heard more negative over the years than anything. Burn out, money, psychotic parents, etc......my son is only 5 and loves the game, but even if he continues to develop I'm pretty sure we're just gonna stick with Dixie Youth route. Lots of great memories to be had that way IMO....baseball is supposed to be fun, dragging my family all over the south and sitting in 100 degree temps all day doesn't sound fun to my family!

Point being, if he's good enough he's good enough

Just know that for most kids, baseball starts to lose its fun when playing travel ball.

Yes, it stops being fun when the coaches go from telling them its ok when they mess up or strike out to screaming at them and hearing constant bitching from coaches trying to live out their dreams through the kids. If you dont fill comfortable with the coach don't be scared to pull him and find a better coach/team. The point of travel ball is to advance your kids skills as much as possible so he can excel in high school as much as possible, not to just say he's on a team that wins games/tournaments.

THIS....I find that most of the parents always throw out
"we play travel ball" like it means they're in some cool club. It's pathetic really! I go watch my little brother on occasion when he's playing a local tourney, and its obvious most of these travel ball teams are just daddies creating teams so they can be in the mix. The quality of play doesn't justify what families have to sacrifice to play, imo

Yeah, no reason to start travel until the kids actually pitch

You got it, seems like anytime a kid is not good enough to make it on a "real" travel team the daddy will start a team just so he can say his son plays travel ball. These teams usually get crushed in tournements, and the dad is a shitty coach so avoid these teams. I say before you commit you kid to a team watch a few practices and get a feel for the coach, you should be able to tell if he's full of shite by the end of practice..

I hate travel ball, but around 12 yoa there really isn't much of a choice.
Travel ball has all the same idiot parent complaints, but now you add money into the issue.
Because of the money travel ball emphasizes winning even when they are very young and should just be focused on learning how to play the game.
It has nothing to do with determining who has a chance to play high school ball. Talent will emerge whether you play 90 games per summer or 20 when you are 10 years old.
