LSU's fan base is like 75% of people who didn't go to school period.

The sidewalk vs alum debates never fail to pull a large amount of opinions and arguments.

I'm inclined to say no. Sidewalk fans can contribute to the school just as much as an alum through ticket purchases, donations, etc. and having an academic degree doesn't make you a more "legit fan".

Often times it does make you a more knowledgeable fan because you've experienced life on campus, the work it requires to go to school there, and such but I wouldn't say you HAVE to go to school to be a "legit fan" or whatever that even means.

for most big schools, that percentage is actually low.

I don't understand the attachment a person has to a school they didnt attend. I do want to understand.

Actually no, I swear I heard that at a pitch to get money for the school. 1 semester and you are an alum. Though its quite possible I misheard.

Most people like that grow up being a fan of said team.

Connections through means other than attending/graduating.. father went there, mother went there, grew up going to games, watched them and admired a coach of theirs, son/daughter went there, family lives/works there, etc.

The list goes on and on and people have varying reasons. I don't believe there's a set list identifying "You can only be a true fan if you blah blah blah".

ETA: I'd say true fan hood is defined by how closely you keep up with your team, or university, participate in going to games/donating, and sticking with them through good seasons and bad.

I grew up in Baton Rouge and lived there until I was 18. I went to an out-of-state college because I wanted to experience something different. Now I live in Nashville, but still watch 70% of LSU baseball games, 100% of the basketball games, and 100% of the football games (make 3-5 a year in person). I am a diehard LSU fan and I never went there. Does this not count in your view?

I grew up an LSU fan, but then I went to another school. I get the tribal warfare aspect of it. I enjoyed it in the military though looking back it seems kind of dumb.

I guess I just relate going to games, yes I've been one of the tens and tens of people in attendance for a Tulane game, as just one aspect of the entire experience. I think if I were an LSU student/alum seeing a bunch of people show up on campus and get wasted and celebrate a school they didnt attend would be kind of perplexing to me.
