Here’s the rule

quote:

A rushing defender is prohibited from forcibly hitting in the knee area or below a passer who has one or both feet on the ground, even if the initial contact is above the knee. It is not a foul if the defender is blocked (or fouled) into the passer and has no opportunity to avoid him.

The RP on Winston was more questionable.

Agree but with all the questionable RP Rodgers has gotten over the years payback is a bitch

The one on Winston was very bad.

There was blatant DPI in the endzone that should have been called though.

Dolphins had a clean sack on Mac Jones. Ball was still in his hands. Clean tackle.

15 yard penalty on Miami that directly lead to a bullshite Patriots TD.

That's easy to say from your couch, but if Mac sets his feet to throw and doesn't turn away from that, his knee is toast.

That’s literally the Tom Brady rule. Funny enough it’s a Patriots QB getting the call. That rule was put in after Tom Brady got hurt in the first game of 2008 with a low tackle.

Why do people keep saying this when it’s simply not true

quote:

After Kimo’s hit on Carson Palmer, the NFL decided the rule book needed additional modification for additional player protection, thus making it illegal to hit a quarterback at or below the knee. Despite Kimo’s involvement, the rule is called the Carson Palmer Rule.

“ How the "Brady Rule" Will Kill Football

DOUGLAS FOSTER
APRIL 21, 2009
A new rule is about to take professional football back to its glory days—of the 1940s.

The so-called "Brady Rule" prohibits defensive players who are on the ground from "lunging" at a quarterback's legs.

The rule was created to prevent the kind of injury that sidelined Patriot QB Tom Brady for the entire 2008 season.”

You can't just hit a quarterback low, even in the course of a normal football play or move. You can esssentially only legally touch them between the shoulder pads and waist.
They need to wear a different color jersey so the defenders remember that's the guy they can't hit. That, or give the QB's flags for defenders to pull.

Yes there’s plenty of articles you can find who misattribute that rule to Brady but they are wrong The NFL instituted a “point of emphasis” after the brady hit (because two franchise QBs got destroyed nearly back to back) and clarified the Carson Palmer rule that was already implemented to also say defenders can’t get back up from the ground and hit low

The Carson Palmer rule is the first one, and is the one more directly related to this penalty. It was instituted directly after the 2006 season.

quote:

During the offseason, the NFL's competition committee proposed a rule change in the interest of quarterbacks' safety. The rule: "A rushing defender is prohibited from forcibly hitting in the knee area or below a passer who has one or both feet on the ground, even if the initial contact is above the knee. It is not a foul if the defender is blocked (or fouled) into the passer and has no opportunity to avoid him."

2006 rule made after the Palmer injury

quote:

"A rushing defender is prohibited from forcibly hitting in the knee area or below a passer who has one or both feet on the ground, even if the initial contact is above the knee. It is not a foul if the defender is blocked (or fouled) into the passer and has no opportunity to avoid him. Notes: A defender cannot initiate a roll or lunge and forcibly hit the passer in the knee area or below, even if he is being contacted by another player. It is not a foul if the defender swipes or grabs a passer in the knee area or below in an attempt to tackle him provided he does not make forcible contact with the helmet, shoulder, chest, or forearm."

And this is the expanded rule to clarify the rule that was already in place. The language of the rule did not fundamentally change, they simply made it more clear of what actually constitutes the penalty with the added notes in 2009
