1974 Braves outfielder Hank Aaron passes Babe Ruth as the all-time home run leader with his 715th, going deep in the fourth inning off Dodger hurler Al Downing in Atlanta's home opener. 'Hammerin' Hank' equaled the Bambino's mark on Opening Day in Cincinnati.

Why did MLB not have the Braves open the season at home?

Braves reliever, and Rangers one-time pitching coach, Tom House caught it in the bullpen.

Because Bowie Kuhn was asshoe.

Didn't he also refuse to attend that game?

If only Hank Aaron were a big enough figure in MLB history to have an all star game in his home stadium...

AS I recall, as opening day approached, there was some consideration by the Braves to holding Aaron out of the Cincinnati series, but he played and hit the tying HR.

I wonder how many home runs Babe could have hit if he had switched over to a position player 2-3 years earlier and if they didn't have those asinine "if it curves behind the foul pole after it goes over the wall then it's just a foul ball" rules.

The season after he passes away, no less.

My dad and I had tickets to all 4 games in the Dodgers series. The 715 game was on Monday and my dad had to do something for work on that Monday and we couldn't get to Atlanta in time for the game. We heard the HR on the radio in the car on the way down. I was just about to turn 7 in a couple of weeks and the trip was my b-day present. I was gutted. Made it worse the Braves lost the next two games.

I am pretty sure my dad was more depressed, he missed history, disappointed his son, and all for something he most likely could have delegated but that wasn't his style.

He had massive longevity. Never hit more than 47 homers in a year but always hit at least 20 for 20 years. He played 3,300 games.

Ruth played 2,500.

Ruth doubled the HRs of every AL team by himself in one year...and led the league every year.

I think Aaron led the league in HRs once. He was a fantastic all-around player but even he didn't believe the record over the myth. In Ken Burns doc he talks about Ruth having the record which is bizarre. It wasn't deferrence just this strange absence mindedness of myth.
