I help coach my 9 year old daughter’s team. It’s a fairly competitive league that we have to pay for her to be on a team. I can tell you, first hand, the behavior of the parents, including those of our players, as well as the coaches, including some of the guys I coach with, is ridiculous. These girls are 9 and just learning how to really play the game. Nonetheless, the refs could call a violation (travel, double-dribble, foul) on LITERALLY every possession. Thank god they don’t. Otherwise, every game would end 4-2 with 75 combined turnovers. Yet, the coaches and parents are losing their shite on the refs on damn near every possession like its game 7 of the NBA Finals. Frankly, I’m embarrassed to be guilty by association with it.

Worse, it’s teaching the kids nothing. Rather than learning to play through adversity and accountability, they spend the entire game bitching about everything. They never make a bad play. It’s ALWAYS someone else’s fault. And why wouldn’t they? That’s all their parents and coaches do. If you try to tell the kids to “forget about the no-call or contact, keep playing”, they look at you like your are crazy.

Are there times the refs make poor calls/no-calls? Absolutely! But there is a way to address that when you are coaching kids. It’s picking your spots to talk to the ref, calmly. Not losing your shite after the first of what is going to be 28 travels in the game
