I did the same thing in my head and was certain Carreño Busta had to be in the top 10. Obviously that was incorrect.

Gotta love Ion Tiriac:

quote:

“That's where we mix politics with business,” he said. “I’m hosting the tournament in Madrid, with the same prize money for men and women.

“But the revenue from women is only 25 percent. That's a fact.

“The men ask me, 'Ion, how long are you going to pay the women with my money?’”

I'm guessing this club prints money and it looks like the sponsor dude is sort of like The Greek from The Wire. All of that said, I'd love to know what it cost to put down and maintain this red clay.

I'm guessing it's there year round, right?

Why do you think it would be prohibitively expensive? They have them all over the place in Europe, it can't be that expensive to put down red clay.

Clay is the cheapest of all the surfaces to maintain properly

Really? You gotta water it and roll it/sweep all the time, although I guess that may not necessarily cost much. I figured we don't have the red stuff because the material is more native to other places and that's why we have more Har-Tru. Unless Har-Tru is cheaper/easier to maintain...

I think that Houston club hosted a Davis Cup tie on grass and had every surface at one point.

Why the hell do we not have more clay courts? Even Houston is not the real red stuff.

Rolling and sweeping is all you have to do to maintain clay

Hard courts require constant maintainence every year or so to keep from cracking or bubbling

Is the Houston court as small as it looks on TV?

Stevie gutted out a win in a heck of a match with Escobedo. Ernesto hit four or five shots that had me just Stevie came over the backhand a few times for some winners, which was nice to finally see.

You have to constantly water clay courts

Just curious, What do you have to do to a hard court on a daily basis to prevent cracking or bubbling? I understand you might have to do some repairs if there is cracking, but what is done to prevent it?

I think it's fair to assume that har-tru is more native to the US than than red clay and thus not-insignificantly cheaper to put down than the red stuff. But I can think of no reason why there would be any difference in maintaining one vs. the other. You just water every now and again, brush it from time to time and you're good.

I also leaned something new today. Har-tru is the name of a brand, not a product (a la kleenex. band-aid, q-tip, velcro, et al. ).
