Yeah I realized that a little while ago but didn’t edit seeing as no one caught it. Figured I’d eventually get shite about it
Don’t care not gonna edit. The rule is essentially the same anyways and I’m not going through the trouble to fix it

The rule is essentially the same
Here is the rule
quote:He has to intentionally interfere with a thrown ball if he is in the basepath
(10) He fails to avoid a fielder who is attempting to field a batted ball, or intentionally interferes with a thrown ball, provided that if two or more fielders attempt to field a batted ball, and the runner comes in contact with one or more of them, the umpire shall determine which fielder is entitled to the benefit of this rule, and shall not declare the runner out for coming in contact with a fielder other than the one the umpire determines to be entitled to field such a ball. The umpire shall call the runner out in accordance with Rule 5.09(b)(3) (former Rule 7.08(b)). If the batter-runner is adjudged not to have hindered a fielder attempting to make a play on a batted ball, and if the base runner’s interference is adjudged not to be intentional, the batter-runner shall be awarded first base;

Interference on a thrown ball DOES require intent.
But that is not the rule that was applied.

Joe Torre just said they called interference
Which means, intent DOES matter. So, in the umps opinion, he said Turner intentionally interfered with Gurriel to stop the throw.
They botched it

Good call. Good explanation from Joe.

Yep. Joe Torre just made it so much worse.
Turner ran straight down the line but didn’t make a miraculous maneuver to dodge the fielder going for a poorly thrown ball, so he’s out. What an embarrassment for the MLB.

Second, noticing that first base itself (the bag) is outside the running lane, the runner is permitted by rule to step out of the running lane for the purpose of touching first base.

The rule itself in the context of first base has been controversial for ages.

That was just Torre being an idiot. It was, for sure, the runner's lane rule was applied.

that's the bottom of the image. if you click on it directly from her tweet, you can see it does include the baseline.

he clearly runs to the left of the left base line just on the edge of the grass.

Torre confirmed the call was interference. Explain how Turner should have dodged Gurriel going for a bad throw

Holbrook embarrassed the hell out of the MLB tonight.

That gif is pretty helpful, much more so than a shitty still shot.

Torre said he agreed with the call. Holbrook made a bad call on a fast moving play
Torre saw replays and still managed to be a fricking idiot

Representing the league, he has to back the ump there but he’d have been better off sidestepping the question.
