There are six teams who’ve made four or more coaching changes in the past decade?—?double the number of the previous 10 years. Last season, the 49ers became the first team in NFL history to fire their first-year head coach in two consecutive offseasons. We live in historic times.

Last week, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk set the over/under for open jobs this offseason at 7.5. There were six coaches hired last year. When Florio started to list the names that could be departing at the end of this season, he wound up with an astounding 14 coaches.

There are not, of course, seven coaches who would fix teams that make a move; there may not be two. In 2016, the Eagles hired Doug Pederson, who’s been an unqualified success. But that same year, McAdoo, Hue Jackson, and Dirk Koetter were all hired, and they all have a chance to be fired after Week 17.

When you talk to executives around the league, they’ll privately grumble at how watered down the coaching market has become, but in many ways, this is self-inflicted since they not only fire coaches often but replace them in uncreative ways. It’s impossible to objectively say that coaching is worse than ever. What we can say is that coaching is more important than ever, but the coaches haven’t improved with the higher demand. Since Bill Belichick was hired by the Patriots in 2000, NFL teams have hired 146 coaches. How many of them have made their teams better?

There are a lot of issues in the league: There’s a quarterback shortage, an offensive line problem, a tackling problem, a play-calling problem, and the list goes on. But the issue with the coaching problem is connected to all of the other ones: A good coach can resolve those issues, and a bad coach can create them.

No one should hire someone like McVay. You need an old guy with NFL head coaching experience. Not some young hot shot who will just be friends with the players

Raiders are waiting until after next year to hire Jeff Fisher. They are counting on his experience in leading a franchise moving cities to ease the transition.

Do Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, Mike McCarthy and Sean Payton have sons?

I get the point of this but it’s not as bad as it used to be.

People laugh when the Marc Trestman’s of the world get hired too. Then after they fail in year 1 it’s “we shouldn’t have hired an HC with no experience.” It’s like unless you land a big name, you’re gonna get criticism either way.

in the past. The college ranks were wide open for coaches because the money was so much greater in the NFL, but now almost no one is hired form the college ranks anymore. Yes, much of this is because many do not run a "pro" style offense and would probably go the way of Chip Kelly with his simplistic, predictable spread against pros....but there are still guys out there that could be very good coaches.

Perhaps the money is so great in college now that they don't need to jump ship anymore...just take Chris Peterson...he has an excellent eye for talent and can develop what's on the roster and run an organization. But he's never jumping, unless MAYBE the Seahawks open eventually, but even then I don't think he goes.

Remeber, most of these guys are essentially gym teachers running multi million and billion dollar enterprises.

Its a "crisis" that north korea has nukes and long range missiles and is led by a despotic psychopath.

Its "interesting" when entertainment companies management teams fail to succeed and are fired regardless of the underlying factors.

The money in the college game is probably it. Also turn around at the NFL level seems to be very high unless you’re Marvin Lewis. A couple of bad seasons means you’re getting the axe. Without a franchise QB, you’re odds of finding a Long term job in the NFL is slim at best.

As for Kelly, his offenses were 4th, 3rd, and 13th. However “predictable” they were, the defenses he went up against didn’t think so. That’s with Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, and Sam Bradford at the helm
