There's a much greater chance that this series will be resurrected now that Dave Brandon is no longer athletic director at Michigan. Not only did Brandon alienate a large amount of Michigan alumni and fans, he also alienated and had a very strained relationship with the Notre Dame AD, Jack Swarbrick.

This series won't be an annual one (not enough scheduling flexibility for that) but could be structured much like the Michigan State and Purdue games. I hope they are able to agree on a few home and home games. This is too good of a rivalry to not play from time to time.

Yeah, I've always heard that Woody didn't want to divide Ohio's Catholics, so he avoided playing them. I think that mentality just sort of stuck around for a while after. Couldn't tell you why they didn't play more before him though.

Please let this be true. Working in Chicago has exposed me to many great Notre Dame fans and co-workers. We really enjoyed this series the past few years. It was such an effortless, natural rivalry built upon respect.

hardly.

michigan blackballed ND from joining the B1G and forced ND to travel across the country just to have some semblance of a schedule (this also, coincidentally, led to ND becoming a natl brand).

and then Dave Brandon refused to renew the series because he had no respect for the ND program - which is weird because the dude was obsessed with status

rivalries matter at ND (USC and Navy) - the UM series just needs to die.

They pick their big 10 teams well
lol both teams are good at that. Idk how Ohio state manages to avoid two of the other three best teams in their relatively small league so frequently.

I thought Swarbrick pulled the fast one there with the hand delivered note a couple of years ago, but I could be wrong.

I can understand your blasts about the poverty B1G, I just think playing "just the tip" with the shitty ACC is a joke (don't give me that crap how you have so much in common with Duke, UNC, etc.).

Anyway, everybody benefits if the schools are swapping out each other for other national powers, so it's all good.

Swarbrick issued the letter because Brandon refused to sign the new contract, he left it sitting on his desk, so Swarbrick just said frick it.

Its no coincidence that the series is being negoitated again since Brandon has been canned.

I also have no issues playing B1G schools, but playing the same damn teams every year is monotonous.

Id much rather just rotate one BIG team per year - UM is not a rival, there is no respect there, it disgusts me that they make millions off of scheduling ND to play when theyve historically been nothing but asses.

They don't have a lot of room with the half arse ACC deal, Navy, USC, and I think MSU is back on there soon. I do miss it, even though it sucks having the season destroyed early by ND.

So waiting until week 5 or week 6 would have made reality less painful?

I wish ND would play Purdue and Michigan State more often. Those are the two big ten teams they have played the most and they have long-standing rivalries with those two schools.

USC and Michigan State are 1 and 2 in all-time victories against Notre Dame. I would like to see the MSU-ND game moved back to November as it once was played.

ND and Navy only continues because ND has a structural advantage against Navy and the other academies. It is ND's buy a win.

I remember thinking it was hilarious that older media members were lamenting the loss of the series and were claiming they remembered watching the game every year when they were young even though from '43-'78 they never played.

shite, ND-Mich has been played 42 times while a series like ND-GT has been played 34 (35 this year) yet none of those sports writers seemed to care that the ACC deal would get ND back to playing GT.

That said, when they play this has always been one of the games I am interested in watching.

I've heard from random people this was b/c the Mich president at the time hated Catholics and this is also the reason why ND ever joining the Big 10 in the future is practically a non starter for the Domer donors currently in charge.

Is that actually true?

Supposedly Fritz Crisler didn't like Notre Dame and didn't want to play them. I don't think it was about religion he just didn't want to help a private school in the Midwest like ND.

Michigan State and Purdue never had any problems. Michigan State played ND before they joined the Big Ten.
