The Masters Announcers Score Card for the week

This is my very subjective rating for the announcers who covered the Masters this week both on live broadcasts and on the golf channel:
Jim Nantz: C
Nick Faldo: B
Verne Lundquist: D (heard him announce Choi when Woods was actually hitting the tee shot, then when Choi got up to hit, Verne, still clueless says " now Tiger Woods". He went on for a good 5 minutes and nobody corrected him. Needs to be put to pature.
David Ferhety: A+
Peter Kostis: B
Gary McCord: B
Mike Tirico: A (easy job; overly sappy poetic crap aside, his robotic understated style is perfect for hosting the first two days)
Golf Channel:
Kelly Tilgman: B
Brandle Chamblee: A+
Notah Begay: A (impressed with him since he is fairly new to the broadcast game)
Frank Nobilo: A
Rich Lerner: F (he adds nothing of value and his features are puff pieces)
Jim Nantz: C
Nick Faldo: B

I thought Peter was about to rile Tiger up iin the postround interview.

I thought Tiger came off as an arrogant, spoiled brat in that interview. Compare the comments of Westwood in his post-tournament interview.

That is what I respect about Peter. He's not bowing down to the great Tiger. He interviews him just like he would anyone else. Too many of the announcers are afraid of losing access to Tiger or being in his bad graces and they cower in fear and trembling in his presene. that is what makes me sick. Come to think of it, I should have rated Nantz a lot lower than C for his constant excuse making for Tiger over the week. Nantz is losing it a bit on both basketball and golf IMO.

Gus Johnson needs to call the US Open.

true...it was almost as if he was channeling Mike Tirico.

That post-round interview was awful. Kostis is terrible in general. If you actually realize how Tiger acted on the course this week, it was a lot better than before. I can pull up video of AK dropping clubs at Congressional, along with the majority of the players cursing after they hit a tee ball or saying, Dammit I suck, etc. People are making a huge deal of everything. I'm not a Tiger apologist, he's an idiot for putting himself in the situation. But there's no reason when after a round where the dude couldn't find the clubface, I mean, he took a foot long divot with a 3 wood on 13 tee, to try to bring up the past 5 months. Just a terribly done interview

Pretty damn good grade for someone banned for life by the Masters and nowhere near the tournament.

Nantz is mailing it in at this point.

that is why I gave him a B.
honestly forgot about his ban and didn't really remember hearing him this weekend, so I threw in a B. He's usually just ok and and not as funny as he thinks he is. Kind of like me.

was it for the bikini waxed greens comment that McCord got waxed by Augusta?

You forgot Peter Oosterhuis, who I think is very good.
Ironically, CBS dropped him this year (except for a couple of tourneys including the Masters) to save money (Tiger fallout).
"This week is the first week of network television as CBS is on the case. But what the golf fan doesn't know yet is that one of there stars, Peter Oosterhuis won't be a part of most of the CBS telecasts this year. His contract ran out last month and CBS who is looking to save a million dollars this year decided not to renew it. So it means that Oosty, who has manned the tower at 17 for close to 20 years won't be a part of CBS telecasts. Now the news isn't completely bad, CBS did sign him up for the Masters and the PGA Championship so he will be a part of those telecasts. While CBS was discarding one of the most popular announcers of all time, Golf Channel saw a golden opportunity and they hired him to do all of the Thursday and Friday telecasts that they do with CBS. So we won't totally lose Oosterhuis. Sky Sports in England also jumped into action, Oosterhuis has done Sky for years and now he will now be a part of seven of their live PGA Tour coverage, giving folks in England a better understanding of the game. So I guess the good news is that Oosterhuis won't fall off the face of the golfing world like Steve Melnyk did when ABC showed him the door several years ago."

Also said something about the mounds and "body bags". May have said "fans" instead of "patrons" a number of times also. Those blue blood nazi bastards.

Oh yea I remember the body bags stuff. I honestly think Augusta takes their puffery too far with stuff like this to control what words an announcer can use. I can understand their insistance of not using the word "rough" because they are correct about that. It really isn't rough. The rest of it goes too far. I think someone higher up had it in for McCord and had him whacked. it smacks of personal grudge
