We have roughly $34M coming off the books. Do you not think we will sign one big FA contract next winter? That would leave us around $20M for raises, McCann, the bench, and CF.

Wright would be stellar if he's right.

I think McCann will get re-worked to right around 18M

Depends on what moves we make during the year this year, but I see us spending our money in the OF next year rather than 3rd.
We have prospects that can play 3B in 2013. We have nobody that can play OF.
But even with the money we will have, it's hard for me to see us spending 15M+ on a player next year with all the raises we will be paying players in the coming years. I see us picking up someone like Nick Swisher.
And unless I've missed some news, it is also hard for me to see the Mets declining Wright's option at the end of the year.

Why re-work his contract? It's not like he is going to go anywhere.
Pick up his 12M option for next year, and then get him to sign a contract for beyond. No reason to spend 6M unnecessary dollars.

your thoughts on Gregor Blanco?
he's putting in a solid bid so far for a roster spot during Giants spring training.

Here's a summary of last years Braves' performances in the field from the fielding bible:

He can probably be a decent backup. Will play solid defense, has some speed. Not sure of his bat these days, but he used to be able to at least handle his own a little bit.
Wouldn't ever use him as a primary pinch hitter or anything though.

I cant stand him anymore. He tweets way too much about crap I dont care about.
I think he'd rather be a music columnist.

I like a lot of the same tv/music as he does so that doesn't bother me. I stopped following Schultz though. I was ok with his Braves stuff but too much other shite that I didn't like. I could do without all his opinions on football and the Falcons.

Cool, thanks. That seems to be the consensus among the folks on the SF message boards. Good 4th OF off the bench.
He's pushing Brandon Belt for a roster spot though because of the log jam at OF/1B.

If Brandon Belt doesn't make the team this year, someone should be fired.

This pretty much backs up everything I believed going into it.
A few thoughts:
-I see no reason to not believe Freddie will get better. He's a pretty athletic guy and he moves around pretty well. I thought he performed at a fine level for a rookie, who is still making the transition to the position. He'll iron out the other kinks and probably end up being an average to above average type of fielder at worst.
-Uggla is flat terrible. I don't care what DOB tries to say.
-We're going to miss AGon at short (unless Simmons ends up getting the nod). But the larger issue here is one of my primary concerns with this team: infield defense. Especially with such a cast of groundball specialists. We could really see some regression from Huddy and Jurrjens, and not necessarily because they are pitching any worse, just because GBs last year that wound up outs, or at worst infield hits without runners advancing, will now be lazy singles that lead to runs.
-Our OF defense is stellar across the board. Prado had a really good first go at LF and he's a plus defender. JHey is one of the best. Bourn more than holds his own. This should really help Beachy, because he's so flyball oriented. Now, I hope Beachy has worked hard to keep his pitches down, because that was a primary reason he struggled down the stretch last year. If he can get the ball down in the zone, he's an Ace level pitcher, IMO.

I dunno. He's talented, but he sucked last year when given the chance.

I disagree. He hasn't even had 700 minor league ABs yet. The only reason he was called up last season is because of injuries. Then he got sent back down then called back up then hurt... I think they need to leave him in AAA until August and see what position they're in. Then after this year when Aubrey Huff retires or is released make him the full-time 1B in 2013.

They stuck the poor kid in the outfield in favor of Aubrey Huff. He is hitting .326 this spring with three homers. He is a career .343 career hitter in the minors. The kid can hit but you have to give him consistent playing time.

He was great last spring and in the minors as well.
I just think he may need a little more seasoning. He's by no means a lost cause, but I don't think bringing him up to the bigs and sticking him on the bench helps him. And they aren't gonna put him ahead of Huff.

Well, like I said, he needs to play. Let him play first. Huff is not a stud and shouldn't be treated as one. The old has-been hit .246 last year with only 12 homers in over 500 plate appearances.

Yeah. I think this paragraph basically supports that:
quote:
Zone rating isn't used too much anymore with the advent of UZR, but it still tells you a little bit about Freeman's defense. He had 188 balls hit in his zone, and he made the play on 138 of them. That 73.4% success rate is second worst among all first baseman, ahead of just Carlos Pena. Oddly, Freeman did make 32 plays out of hte zone, the fourth highest mark in the league. What this essentially says is that Freeman had issues with more routine plays, but was able to make more plays that he wasn't expected to make.
I don't see any reason why he would start making the routine plays more frequently while still making plays out of the zone.
