I'm surprised Sheehan went against the metrics.

He was pretty reliant on the numbers throughout, but his suggestion was basically that he thinks the advanced numbers will balance out.

Even though it wasn't a bigger game than his frick up in the playoffs, I will always remember him for his grand slam against the Reds.

Without that GS vs. the Reds, or the one he hit in Miami, the Braves would not have even been in the playoffs. They only won the WC by a game or two, IIRC.

Not to mention 1B really don't get a ton of chances in one season compared to other positions, so you really have small sample size problems with Freeman's numbers anyway. It will probably take a couple seasons to normalize his numbers, and he does struggle going left. The stuff he does best doesn't show up in the defensive metrics anyway, which makes judging 1B defense about like judging catcher defense in some ways.

He mentioned that picking balls out of the dirt and stuff is calculated into DRS, which I didn't know.

Freddie's DRS was 0 last year, though.

Huh, I'd always heard that Fangraphs fielding rankings for WAR didn't include that, nor did their DRS. Maybe I'm just off. But if it is included he should have much better numbers than he does, cause he's one of the best in baseball at picking balls.

This is all I could find in a quick search: LINK

Even still, being at 0 means he's at "league average" and I think you are right about taking some time for his UZR numbers to normalize.

Yeah, for last years stats he'd be ranked the worst in baseball for UZR. And there is no way in hell he's worse than Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, or Miggy at 1B.

As far as the picking balls and DRS goes, I didn't really see a spot where they would go in on their list, I don't think they count as 1B chances in the usual sense. The only thing they seem to be using for the DRS ranking for 1B is the:
rPM – Plus Minus Runs Saved evaluates the fielder’s range and ability to convert a batted ball to an out.

And fielding throws wouldn't count for that.

No way Chip plays 80 games at 3B this year.

Chipper to 1B, Freddie to LF, Prads to 3B! champ!!

(totally joking)

If we would have signed PRince to play SS, all of our problems would have been solved.

Chipper looks like an older version of what I picture 31 looking like IRL.
