We really need to stop with the big trades and FA signings IMO.

I see what you are saying but if we want to win the world series we can't rule out big trades/signings. I don't want to be the '97/'03 Marlins. Sure we can lock up your young guys and compete for NL East titles but it's clear that the recipe for going the distance includes a dominant starting pitcher. We don't have that right now and we sure as hell aren't drafting one or bringing one up from the minors next year.

Exactly. Our window is now. Everyone keeps saying that we should lock up our young guys, but they have not shown that they are interested in signing with us long term. In fact, most reports are that Heyward's people wouldn't even discuss it with us last off season.

We have to make a decision as a franchise. Do we want to position ourselves to be an 80-90 win club for the next 4 years and go one and done or do we want to win a world series?

Jupton and Heyward are under contract for 2 more years and Freddy just 3. Now is the time. You have to do whatever it takes to get Price/Hernendez/C.Lee big game, clear cut, ACE.

I would try to sign Freeman long term. Not sold on Heyward yet.

Alright, let's say we go this route. Who do we give up? I think this was alluded to earlier, but the Rays got a top 5 overall prospect for James Shields, who isn't even in the same ballpark as Price in terms of value. I'm not sure if we even have a top 50 overall prospect at this point. IIRC, our highest rated prospect was somewhere in the 40-60 overall range. Cliff Lee is due a metric shite ton of money next season, and I doubt the Phillies will be willing to eat a dime of it. The Mariners have never shown any willingness to move Felix, and I'm sure they have been offered a king's ransom (no pun intended) on more than one occasion.

So with a depleted farm system, ~$30 million tied up in two worthless players next season, and a sub $100 million payroll...how do we go out and get an elite starting pitcher?

That's the part I don't know. A few of you are much more knowledgeable of our farm system so I wondered if we had the pieces to make it work. Typically, we have as much or more to offer than anyone else it's just a matter if we are willing to. I'm just tired of getting bounced right away when we can see it coming from a mile away.

Do we really "need" a starter?

I mean we have Minor, Teheran, Medlen, Wood, Beachy.

I mean, we're gonna count on those 5, right?

Don't think we need him and I believe the A's will sign him back.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with just those 5. Not enough depth. With Beachy coming back from TJ still and Wood maybe being a reliever, I think we need to sign at least one guy. I don't know what Bartolo and Hudson are going to get, but I might rather have Bartolo at $7 mill instead of Hudson at $9 mill

Good response. The "outrage" over his pick was dumb.

I think we may go cheaper than that, I guess is what I'm getting at. I doubt Huddy would require 9 mil at this point. Not coming off an injury at his age.

But my guess is we go for the super cheap veteran route for a starter. Maybe try and sign a guy that's a "reclamation project" of sorts like Earvin Santana or Shaun Marcum.

I wouldn't mind rolling the dice on Halladay if we can get him for 8 or 9 million.
