I would take Beltran if the Mets pick up a good bit of the salary or don't take much for him. His health is the main concern with him. If he plays as well as he has then I would love that move without giving up the farm for him.

quote:

The Giants are among Carlos Beltran's most serious suitors, report Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Closer Brian Wilson acknowledged his team's interest in the Mets right fielder last night, saying, "I guess we're in talks with them about Beltran." It's not clear whether Wilson has inside information or is just putting his spin on public rumors.

Beltran indicated a few days ago that he wouldn't be shocked if the Giants acquire him, and you have to assume he'd approve a trade there. The Mets' recent trade of closer Francisco Rodriguez was about avoiding the reliever's $17.5MM vesting option for 2012, something that had to be done even if the team remained on the fringes of contention. But trading Beltran for prospects or salary relief would be a clearer white flag on the 2011 season.

Beltran will have about $6MM remaining on his contract at the July 31st deadline. Many contenders can't take on that size of a burden, but the Mets could kick in cash to receive better players in return, especially now that they're relieved of K-Rod on their 2012 books. The Giants, Red Sox, Rays, Tigers, Indians, White Sox, Pirates, and Reds are contenders that could use a corner outfield boost. The Phillies and Braves could as well, if the Mets are willing to deal with division rivals. Six or seven teams have real interest in Beltran, but the Yankees are not one of them, according to ESPN's Buster Olney (on Twitter).

i see Beltran best fit for the Giants or Tigers

Man, forget this year... I'm beginning to worry about his career going forward at all...

He'll be fine. Recovery rate for TJ is one of the longest of all the major orthopedic surgeries. 12 months is the minimum recovery time and it's not uncommon at all for it to take 18 months to fully recover. We're not even at the 12 month mark.

On MLB Trade Rumors they're saying Coco Crisp is the most likely acquisition for us.

Would he really be much of an upgrade? I just don't see what we would stand to gain by replacing Schafer with him.

i remember looking at this contract not too long ago. i think it's something like the A's can buy him out for $500k or give him $5 mil next year. no way he doesn't get traded if that's the case. they're always looking to get younger and cheaper.

Yep, 5.75 mil club option or 500k buyout.

Is Bourn worth it? I think so, others might not.

Bourn: .287/.351, 35 steals
Coco: .267/.314, 26 steals (last year: .279/.342, 32 steals... in 328 PAs)

Bourn is having a career year, but he seems to just be a slightly better version of a guy like Crisp, who would certainly cost less.

Personally, I believe Crisp is better in CF, as well.

Best Braves available prospects are Minor and Delgado according to MLBTR.

He's 28, which is the ideal age for a major league player. He's supposed to be having his career year.

The last 3 years:

Bourn: 1684 PA, .279 AVG, .348 OBP, 148 SB
Coco: 889 PA, .263 AVG, .326 OBP, 71 SB

I'd be willing to pay a little bit more for a guy like Bourn, who is coming into stride and is a few years younger

I think Bourn is an impact player that will play everyday and be a difference between this team being a playoff contender and a world series contender.

With Coco, I feel we get a decent leadoff hitter that may make a huge difference, and may not. Give me the sure thing for a team that has a chance to win it all this year.

Right, I'm just saying his numbers have looked a lot like Coco's beside this year.

Bourn isn't a great get on base guy... he doesn't walk a ton.

I'm building a salary spreadsheet just to look at some things...

But I'm going to have to brush up on the arbitration rules first. Anyone have a good source of reading on that?

True, you would definitely like to see him take more walks. Coco as well.

The determining factor in this for me is Bourn's speed which is elite. I like Coco's as well, but Bourn is a notch or two ahead of him

Basically, I want Bourn, but I'm not going to overpay for him when a guy like Coco can be had. We'll have to trust Wren to make what he thinks is the best decision.
