I didn't watch the game, so I don't know the situation. Was there nobody else who could have PH so he wouldn't have had to hit?

No. CJ had been ejected and no one else on the roster can play 3B or SS besides Simmons, who was already in the game. If you PH for Janish there and we only score 1 run, there's no one to play 3B in the 10th.

Jim Joyce sucks at calling balls and strikes. He got frustrated by his inability to make the correct call and decided to take it out on Chris Johnson.

Wood threw a pitch that caught so much of the plate Gattis nearly threw the ball down to 3rd when he realized Joyce called it a ball. He wasn't giving him anything borderline either really.
Then he called strike 2 on CJ on a ball that was a few inches off the plate, and then strike 3 on a pitch that looked a bit outside, but probably should have been swung at. CJ decided to let him know how terrible he is at his job, and instead of accepting that he fricked up and taking it, Joyce decided to be a bleeding vagina and tossed him.
