Yeah, I gotcha. Maybe I'm alone here, but I'd rather have Freddie if I had to choose. He could be a .300 hitter the rest of his career while playing good D at first base.

Freddie does not play good D though and his his bat is not that special for his position. He will probably always hit for a better average than Heyward, but when you take defense, baserunning, hitting, and positional value into account Heyward blows him away tbh.

Freddie is a very solid 1st baseman.

He is good at presenting a big target and stretching, yes. He's a statue over there, though. Has no range.

Nah, but someone called him a retard for speaking a second language poorly.

No one who bats a guy with a .280 OBP leadoff night after night deserves lineup construction praise.

It really depends on what they cost. I'd much rather have Freddie for a long term deal at 10-13 mil a year than Heyward at close to 20 mil a year. Now if we are talking about Freddie getting some ridiculous 15+ mil a year deal, then yeah, see you later.

Most of the WAR difference between the two players comes down to defense, and in particular UZR (which is a defensive stat I'm not a gigantic fan of, though it's hardly worthless). Freddie has poor range, but I think he's an average 1B defensively. And DRS seems to back that up, with him being +2 DRS for his career.

I think defensive WAR is way overvalued personally. Heyward definitely is a great RF defensively, but there is no way in hell he should have more WAR than Freddie this year when he has a .305 wOBA/.670ish OPS and Freddie has a .369 wOBA/.842 OPS.

And I think it's way to early to make any sort of judgements on Freddie's bat as far as how special it is. He's 23, he will likely develop quite a bit more power in the next couple of years. He's currently 7th in OPS and wOBA for 1B, and if he managed to consistently hit 25 HRs a year while maintaining his BA and walk rates he could easily be a consistent top 5 1B with his bat.

Of course it's also way too early to judge Heyward's bat as well for the same reason. But Jason has a full season's worth of ABs over Freddie and has shown zero signs of being able to hit lefties, and has the same holes in his swing he's shown since the end of his rookie season. Clearly if Jason could consistently post OPS numbers in the .840-.850 or above range he'd be one of the most valuable players in baseball with his great defense, but it's a pretty big stretch to say he's that player right now given his offensive inconsistencies.

And against Harvey, tough luck there.

Very fair. I can agree with all that.

In other news, I was watching some BJ Upton Rays video and his stance and use of the leg kick in particular is very random.

At times last year he was using a more closed tance with a high leg kick with success, and at other times he looked very similar to how he's looked the past week or so with an open stance and minimal movement with his front leg.

Yeah, BJ is all over the place, it's not hard to see why he is so streaky. It's still bizarre to me that a guy could go from a good contact, great walk rate guy his first couple seasons to being the hitter BJ is now. Hopefully he can find some consistency in his approach and keep hitting well like he has in June.
