any chance they move kent lowe from his bowling column to cover lsu football, or is that a conflict of interest?

well .. the vast majority of people that read and buy newspapers are your 50+ crowd that is not computer savvy and a lot them don't use the internet .. so the paper still has a viable market there .. also .. the circulars and coupons for the women as well as a lot of the advertisements don't transfer well online .. at one time, the sports section drove advocate sales .. thanks to the internet, that can no longer be the case ..

top writers are bailing out of print news media at an alarming rate due to the proliferation of internet news. The papers that don't beef up the online content are getting left behind.

not to mention, you can do 90% of your work from your home office and not have an actual office or douchebag editor to physically report to everyday ..

Honestly I am not sure what a circular is, so you may have a point. But I am not going to lie to you, I completely lost my train of thought and have no idea why I posted that.

Well I would imagine you would always have deadlines. They probably still have to edit the content you are posting on the internet before it is posted. I think it is more of a money thing, like they can't afford those dudes anymore.

if you took every literate american over the age of 21, we'd prolly be amazed at how low the percentage is of them having consistent, internet access .. this is why papers will be around for a little while longer ..

A couple of the local sports guys here that have written for the sports page for many years have moved on recently. It seems to be a national trend that established sports writers are taking jobs with independently owned blogs and the like.

I am not having a very strong afternoon posting.

Chicken I agree with you but some of the newspapers are getting smart and treating their online content differently. Granted they are few and far between but eventually if they want to survive they will be exclusively online for most of the main content.

Yeah, 500 to 1,500 word sports coverage essays due every other day or so, game recaps, post-game interviews, practice coverages, and opinion fluff pieces, with per diems and pressbox amenities to attend ballgames for a national powerhouse program, has to be a pressure-filled and back-breaking gig.
Now, as for owning your own blogsites and/or making good coin freelancing for USA Today or Sporting News,etc..possibly being a superior gig in pay and/or time constraints, it may well be, I don't know.
But, being a sportswriter, even if underpaid for some or many of them, must still be a job that many would trade for, on many levels?
And yes, today's Advocate Sports page, sucks in contrast to the one I read as a kid from 1977 to say 1990, when they won national and regional awards yearly.
Here's hoping Rabalais' page is up soon, and Dubois resurfaces locally. Also wishing Steinle and Hanagriff were on radio or in print more often locally.

with all the blogs out there .. questions about liquidity, credibility, and longevity have to come into play .. i'm not so sure i'd leave my job as the beat writer for the houston rockets for the chronicle to blog for rocketsfans.com or whatever ..
