McEnroe dominated on hard surfaces.

McEnroe was an amazing doubles player - some say the best ever, mens and mixed. He was also huge in the Davis Cup, when that event was languishing.
I can see how you can make a "bigger picture" argument for McEnroe's ranking, despite the apparent flaws.
And even if you nitpick his performance in singles events, his career overlapped with what is arguably the toughest era of tennis - Bjorg, Connors, Vilas, Lendl, Noah, Wilander, Becker, Edberg, Cash, etc. all competing hard during an era of great transition for the game in terms of courts, equipment, fans - the so-called "golden era".
Great post whether folks are fer or agin.

They had to do this.

Just like they always rank Magic and Bird side by side, 4-5, 5-4.

The big what-ifs.

So dominant in that tiny little body.

More skill than Graf and Serena.

She won nine Grand Slam singles titles, eight of them as a teenager and beat Graf 3 out of 4 times in Grand Slams.

Watched them all from Chrissy and Martina and Graf and Seles and Hingis and Serena...and Seles just returned everything.... Like Nadal.
