Hell, a quarter of the players are already there.

This is a shocking decision to me. I can't believe they're cancelling the tournament.

The overreaction on this is insane
Illegals killed more people in the valley last year than total infected and you didnt hear a peep about emergency.
So now you have players hitting up the local bars instead and being in direct contact instead of on the court and in their rooms.

I have to imagine it was discussed, but I don't know why they didn't decide to play without fans.
There are journalists arriving after 10+ hour flights just finding out about the cancellation. It's worse for them than the players.
Then you have Thiem defending 1000 points with no chance to make it up.

They are acting like planning on a reschedule made more sense than playing without fans, which is silly. Hell, the bulk of the fans are only there on the weekend anyway.

Wonder where a reschedule would fit in the tennis calendar when it's not too hot in Palm Springs. Maybe after the ATP Finals, but I don't know how that would affect points being defended.

Complete opposite reaction from the Australian Grand Prix folks-

Supposedly the reason they couldn’t run it without fans is because of prize money, but I’m sure most players would still do it for the ranking points.
Going forward it gets interesting. With Miami being a big retirement community and facing backlash if they don’t follow suit, I would bet it gets cancelled too. Then you look at places like Spain and Italy for the clay swing... this is not looking good.

Now they’re discussing a 3-month shutdown of the tour.

I actually wouldn't care if they are back for RG. If RG goes, Wimbledon is gonna go, too.

In the last hour I've seen rumors from tennis journos on Twitter of Miami being cancelled as well as a potential 6-week suspension of play for both the ATP and WTA tours (both player councils are supposedly meeting today to discuss). Keeping fingers crossed that we can at least get some tourneys played with no fans in attendance but it's not looking good right now.

I was hoping for tournaments with no fans, but not doing tournaments at all is seeming more likely. ?

I think some events like the NCAA tournament will be OK because there is so much TV money. But, I believe cracka alluded to this (and I saw someone said Larry Ellison talked about), that the prize money and event in general needs the ticket revenue and concessions. So, tournaments without fans isn't feasible.
I'm guessing something like Wimbledon could do as they are a bit like the Masters and kind of an independent money machine. But, it won't work elsewhere.

Players have already been notified a 6 week suspension is certain
More to possibly come later

The GOAT debate will be even crazier if RG and Wimby are cancelled. There are only so many slam chances left for the big 3.
