Huh?

How would novak tying Nadal piss off Fed fans?

Novak has 17.
Nadal has 19.

So, Novak winning the US Open would not tie him with Nadal, but would inch him closer to Fed. This will piss off fed fans. It will also inch him closer to Nadal, which will piss off Nadal fans.

On one hand, one could argue he makes a decent point.

On the other hand, Rafa has won 4 US Open's since Smug won his last. Of those 4, Novak was in the draw for all of them, and Rafa beat Novak in the final twice.

So, Rafatards making the asterik argument do have a little bit of a point. Smugaphiles making the asterik argument should just kindly stfu.

Signed, Rafatard #1

True, but Rafa hasn't beaten Novak at a hard court slam since the 2013 US Open final. Since that match Novak has won 19 CONSECUTIVE SETS on hard courts against Rafa. So yea I'm gonna call the asterisk argument BS no matter how you slice it. Oh and Fed hasn't beaten Novak at a hard court slam since 2009

This does seem like a situation where it is at least arguably warranted.

Maybe arguable to fans of certain players, that’s about it.

1. Full list of players missing the Open who could conceivably lift the trophy:

Nadal
Federer

2. Full list of players who are “officially” claiming to skip the tourney due to coronavirus who could conceivably lift the trophy:

Nadal

Asterisks are not for situations like this. You’re trying to punish a guy for... wait for it... doing his job and playing a tennis tournament. If we start retroactively attaching asterisks to every tourney where the winner avoided the big 3, there would be about a dozen to give out.

The reason it isn't complete BS is that the more top players are out of a draw, the easier it is to win. And it appears we are looking at a tournament with several notable top slots absent.

We'll see how bad the damage is in a few weeks

Ok then it’s just 1 guy, and that guy decided to focus on RG instead of both slams.

Kinda kills the asterisk argument.

Rafa, Fed, Monfils, the Fog, and Stan are the only Top 20 players who as of now are going to miss the US Open. And Kyrgios is the only other player currently ranked in the top 40 who is not playing. So we'll have 15 out of the top 20 and 34 out of the top 40 on the men's side. This isn't a situation with a depleted draw that would any way warrant an asterisk.

And Thiem, Medvedev and Tsitsipas are all bigger threats to beat Novak at the US Open than Rafa or Fed would be right now. The fact that Rafa and Fed won't be in the draw to take out those guys before they get to Novak arguably makes Novak's path to a US Open title even tougher.

Exactly. There have been much worse draws due to injuries in recent years.

I'm adopting more of a devil's advocate approach here.

Well, that would be a terrible argument, but I suppose one could advance it.

So, who is out? TGGRN, Smuggy, Nishi, Honey Nut, Stan the Man, Foggy, and Mighty Mon Fees?

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a few more....time will tell on that, I suppose.

Is Delpo still playing tennis?

Play handicapper and set odds for a hypothetical 2019 US Open Final of Rafa v. Djokovic.

Not as terrible as your asterisk arguments, but I’m sure Fedfans and Rafans will keep moving the goalposts on when there should be an asterisk.

Assuming you mean 2020.... I’d say somewhere around Novak -375 ML / -6.5 games.

If we're going with 2020, then it will be played on that new Laykold surface... same as the Miami courts. Novak seems to have more of an edge there than other courts.

Old USO courts: Novak -250
New courts: Novak -300

I wouldn't go crazy considering Rafa won it last year. That's why I'm surprised by his decision. I don't think skipping NY improves his RG chances very much at all, unless he's really worried about injury.

Agreed. Given how Rafa usually builds in form over the weeks leading up to RG and usually peaks at RG, I’m surprised he’s not trying to get in as many matches as possible. Obviously W&S Open and US Open aren’t being played on clay, but it’s still a relatively slow hard court surface. Rome is going to be absolutely huge for Rafa’s RG form given his lack of match play.

I think the physical, grueling match against Medvedev last year really took a lot out of Nadal in the weeks following the US Open final. Maybe he's having nightmares about a scenario where he makes a run to the final and loses to Djokovic (likely).
