Bad coaches can win a lot of games with a good roster. Mediocre coaches can win a title with a great roster.

College football will turn into the NBA, where the coach gets flipped every few years to appease multi-million dollar investments (players).

At some point there arent really any "cant miss" hires.

I mean Saban at Bama was the only one of the last 20 yrs.

Everyone else was an unknown.

Maybe Urban Meyer?

these are technically public employees.

But their buyouts are not getting paid for with tax dollars. So it's kind of a moot point.

Those numbers are insane though. I thought Fickell's $25MM buyout at UW was ridiculous. But to another posters point I'd rather trudge on with Fickell and spend $20MM on a better roster than give him$25MM to walk away.

Well if the big buyouts are to disappear the fans of big time programs better get used to their ADs hiring Coordinators or coaches from lower rated programs.Top 20 coaches won’t leave their schools without a large garuntee.

They used to move all the time before massive guaranteed buyouts became a thing. If school A is paying you $2MM and school B is gonna double that, you're likely bolting regardless of whether there's a huge buyout. Because program C wouldn't be offering a big buyout either.

My dream job is a fired SEC head coach that just signed a 5 year extension 2 years prior.
