What do you mean? Do you even know the circumstances surrounding that game?
Posted on 12/1/08 at 2:13 pm to MJRuffalo
Yea, a team you're claiming to be top 15 got their asses beat and barely squeaked out a game against an absolute dogshit team.

There was some mishap of the flight for Oregon. Their flight did not arrive until 1:00 AM the morning of the game. Close to 3 by time they got to the Hotel and in their rooms. Difficult circumstances for any team. Still Oregon got the win.

Your explanations know no bounds.

Why do people keep putting USC over Penn State? Is it because they beat Ohio State by 32 at home and the Nittany Lions only beat them by 10 on the road? That shouldn't matter, since USC lost to Oregon State which Penn State crushed. Fortunately, it will be settled in Pasadena unless USC fricks up.

Some explanation:
I look at all of the one-loss BCS conference teams plus Utah as one tier. And I rank teams on two variables: who I think would win and on resume. And resume voting for me weighs one factor above all else: who did you beat? Here are the quality wins over bowl eligible teams of each of the contenders for #2 behind Bama:
OKLAHOMA: TCU, Cincinnati, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Oklahoma St
TEXAS: Oklahoma, Mizzou, Oklahoma St
TEXAS TECH: Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma St
FLORIDA: LSU, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida St
USC: Ohio St, Oregon, Arizona, Cal, Notre Dame
PENN ST: Wisconsin, Ohio St, Michigan St
UTAH: Air Force, Oregon St, TCU, BYU
First off, who else thinks it’s funny Air Force is a better win for Utah than Michigan?
Some things jump out: Penn St didn’t play ANYBODY. They ducked both Minnesota and Northwestern, the other two bowl eligible Big Ten teams. Utah actually has a pretty good resume. USC’s wins outside of Ohio St aren’t that special. None of Florida’s wins are that great, really. Texas only beat three bowl eligible teams, and their quality wins don't look all that different from Texas Tech's.
But what really jumps out is how much better OU’s resume is than everyone else. TCU has one of the best defenses in the country and might be the best team in the Mountian West. If they play Utah 100 times, they probably win 60 of them. Unfortunately for them, the real one was one of the 40. Cincinnati won the Big East and OU beat them when Cincy still had a healthy QB. Nebraska went 8-4. Okie St is 9-3. They beat a one-loss team. Their only loss is to a one-loss team.
I’m all for head-to-head to break a tie, but there simply isn’t a tie. It’s not really that close in my eyes. As far as ranking these teams in a poll, not thinking about breaking a tie in the division, it’s clear to me that OU has the best overall resume.

According to this, then using your own reasoning it looks to me like you have Florida way, way too high. USC has 2 wins better than UF's best win. Texas also has 2 wins better than UF's best win, and Penn St has at least 1 win better than UF's best win.

Florida's resume is behind Texas, OU, and Tech (actually, Tech gets negative points for its embarassing schedule - they play no one). It's on a par with PSU, USC, and Utah. However, I also satted I rank teams on who I think would win. And Florida has looked awesome. Yes, the quality of teams beaten has not been there, but they have been killing those teams. So I push them up based on the power poll.

Do you mean from BCS conferences? Rice is 9-3, will be in a bowl and tied for first in CUSA West with Tulsa.
ETA: Kansas is also Bowl Eligible (OU and TTU played them as well).

Totally forgot Rice. that's an oversight. and I thought Kansas was 5-7. If they are 6-6, they should be listed as well. Then again, while these help UT's case, it's hard to say your resume is that much stronger by virtue of beating Rice and Kansas.

Well, it only took the entire season for the rest of the universe to see that Cincy is a decent football team.

Kansas is 7-5.
Worth noting as well. Texas beat Kansas 35-7 at Kansas, could have been at least 42-7, but Mack Opted to take a knee with 2 minutes. 7 was KU's lowest point total of the year, their 2nd lowest was 21. They socred 31 on OU.
Maybe Rice and KU don't signigicantly bolster your resume, but is TCU really that much better? Would they come anywhere close to 10-2 is they and not Baylor were in the big 12?

If Baylor had Kansas' schedule, Baylor would be 7-5. Just sayin'.
I think TCU could go 9-3 or 10-2 if they were in Big 12 North. TCU is a lot better than Kansas. I'm a huge fan of that team this year. The defense is just killer.

the only Big 12 team Baylor played that Kansas did not was Ok State.

maybe, I don't know about a lot: I doubt TCU would beat more than 1 of Texas, OU, TT and Mizzo. KU went 1-3

Funny thing is that this years Kansas and Missouri teams are at least just as good if not better than they were last year, but their records are nowhere the same. Just shows how overall weak CFB was last year. Outside of 2007 USC, I doubt a single one of last years teams would automatically qualify for a bcs bowl this year. You could have the case where the 2 teams that played for the bcs nc, would be in the Cotton Bowl and Cap One bowl this season.
