I say true. Better to be the Washington Generals to Tiger instead of Tiger being out of the game entirely.

Obviously true.

Sports need superstars. Not a bunch of average competitors.

Especially in golf, where it's individual.

Phil has always thanked Tiger for the amount of money he has been able to make on tour.

Watch for the ratings tomorrow. They may top his 1997 Masters, which had 20MM viewers.

This had 13 million. Which honestly shocks me. I've never watched golf a day in my life. I don't get the hype.

I don't know how all this works so this may be an ignorant quesiton, but are there different payouts based on viewership numbers?

I guess from an uninformed view (mine), it seems like a no-brainer to win a higher purse rather than lose (and win less money).

With “Tiger is back” to use while selling advertising spots you can name your price I’m sure

The logic is that Tiger equals many more people watching golf, which leads to more marketing dollars and larger purses for all the players in the long run.

I want to see the peak numbers. The broadcast started at 6am on the west coast, so the average numbers are understandably low.

True, and it isn't even close.

I had 2 people tell me yesterday that they know nothing about golf and never watch it, but they watched some of the Masters yesterday because Tiger was doing well.

The hope for the tour is that with Tiger playing well, more eyes will be on golf....and hopefully by osmosis the "new" people will find other players likable also and have yet another reason to follow the tour.

Pretty simple formula, really:

TIger wins = higher golf ratings=more chances for sponsorships for other guys not named Tiger

They said it on air after the win.

Basically:

Tiger brings in the non-golf fan, the sports fan who never watches golf.

He triples the viewership. He means everything to the sport if he's in contention on Sunday.

Then golf becomes the NFL.

Otherwise it's a niche watching sport for a few.

The average general sports fan isn't tuning in to watch Bubba or Rory.

Tiger winning brings eyes that would otherwise be doing something else on Sunday and that leads to the average viewer indirectly learning about the other golfers and improves those golfers brand name recognition and therefore their net worth to sponsors.
