That’s my point! Motivation and passion matter
Hoke was a joke, but he always played OSU close. Even his last putrid year

quote:Well PSU is a good team and as talented if not more talented than UM) most importantly at QB position. I also think they've had a better offensive philosophy. Not to mention, they have arguably the best home field advantage in all of the NCAA.
Then explain why teams like Purdue, Iowa, psu, and MSU have given OSU far more fits than mich has?
Michigan State has lost 3 straight by an average of almost 30 points and lost 5 of the last 6. And they had a pretty great when they have one recently. Not to mention the combination of Tim Beck as OC (see how much better the offense was with Herman before him and Day after him; plus barely gave Zeke the ball) and terrible weather contributed to the 17-14 game.
The Purdue and Iowa losses were probably an issue of motivation (big game for them; overlooked by OSU) and just kind of a hallmark of Urban's career (Ole Miss in 2008) where there was one big letdown game. But those happen in any sport at all levels.
There is no motivational excuse for the OSU-UM game, although maybe you can argue that OSU's focus on that game in all facets of the program plays a role (but I think that's overstated). The fact of the matter is that OSU has been much more talented than UM, especially at QB. And in a big game (no let downs) talent is going to be far more important (as well as game plan).

quote:OSU's teams when Hoke was coach were not near as good as they were during Harbaugh's tenure, save for 2014. The 2015 and 2019 teams were two of the best in OSU history, while the 2011 team (Hoke's only win) was one if its worst in decades (as a result of tattoo-gate).

And 2 of those games were quite close with Harbaugh (2 OTs in one).

Motivation and passion matter
I think you can blame Harbaugh for not bringing in the talent, developing it, and providing a scheme to maximize it as well as OSU (and probably PSU). But I don't think that passion is the cause for the disparity.
In fact, Shea Patterson was ridiculously passionate, maybe TOO passionate (tried to fight some fans when one made fun of the score 2 years ago at OSU).

The most miserable I have ever been at a football game. That night was horrific.

And if I'm recalling your posts correctly, we used to tailgate (before we started having kids the next year) in the exact same parking lot as you (Ag Admin building parking lot).

Ag Buiding. Yes we did and we will again. KillerNut also tailgates in that parking lot and Kosmo and Buttermilk Pancakes have come to our tailgate.

quote:Yeah. I think it was that game you all were talking about a meet-up (I think one of the Georgia fans may have attended). I thought about messaging on here since I was there, but I guess I chickened out (or partied too hard ).

I think it says more about their national standing and championship prospects than the culture itself. In other words, it's easier to come back when you're a national championship contender.
I agree. I also expect a mass exodus of opt-outs the second these contenders(the entire nation) lose their 2nd game or are eliminated from winning their division. Happy to have the Big 10 playing, but there’s still lots of ways this season could get flipped upside down retarded. Hard to get too excited about anything yet.
