Suns hire first ever European Head Coach in NBA

I thought it would happen soon, but I would have put money on Ettore Messina. Instead it is Igor Kokoskov, an assistant on the Jazz who has been with Quin Snyder back at Mizzou and the LA Clippers.
Spent 5 years with Larry Brown at the Pistons and 5 years with the Suns. Won Eurobasket last year with Slovenia (Luka Doncic, Goran Dragic, and LSU's own Anthony Randolph).
He is 46.

As a Mavs fan, I hate this because now the Suns could go Doncic at 1 and Memphis go Ayton at 2 if the lottery odds stay true

I can't imagine a scenario where those two guys aren't the first two off the board. If they're not, some GM is going to get fired.
But also, it doesn't matter because PHX is going to fall to #4 in the lottery.

Well Yugolavs (or former Yugoslavs) know basketball about as good as anyone, so I'm sure they'll be in good hands...especially the way the modern game is going.

Messina might get that Charlotte job huh?

Definitely seems like a way to make the Luca transition as easily as possible.
But the Mavs should be very happy if they get Marvin Bagley.

Well before this, I could see Ayton at 1 to Phoenix and then Bagley to Memphis to pair with Gasol and give Conley PnR hell for opposing defenses
For some reason, we are dead set on keeping Harrison Barnes at PF, so it would be Bamba or hope Porter Jr. will be back to normal
And with Cuban as our owner, no way in hell the ping pong balls go in our favor

I think Udoka is going to be a better coach than Messina tbh

Yeah man that sure would suck to get Ayton

He was the first ever Eastern European to coach in the NCAAs as well. Great resume and interesting background. He has been in the US for almost two decades and has a very light accent.
Messina is one of the greatest Euro coaches of all time along with Obradovic at Fenerbahçe. Won just about everything he could at Panatinakos before that. Thankfully he will never come over. Now Messina should get looks. The Knicks are too dumb to look at him but I have heard the Hornets and the Magic are considering him.
I would be wary if I was him. Both teams have bad cap space.

Really interested to see how this turns out. Im friends with a bunch of serbs and they're pretty obnoxious about how much they think Euro coaches are better than their American counterparts

He doesn't have much time to wait around. He's almost 60 already

I think he will be good because of his background and having been in both countries for half his life. Messina will be good too because he is a genius.
But I don’t think the average Euro coach is brilliant. Dario Saric kind of shite on Euro coaches earlier this week and I think he made fine points about how they are conservative, pigeonhole unique talents, and are too rigid.

Well that Yugolavian team in 1990-1991 was frankly ahead of its time.
Americans were posting up and clearing out to go one-on-one and the Slavs were passing like the Spurs the last decade.
A common quip about basketball is: "The Americans invented it, the Yugoslavs perfected it."
The game now suits that mentality but it would have been nice to see it matchup with a European coach in the 1990's. Pat Riley style vs. the European free-flowing passing style sort of like how the Soviets in hockey were this ballet of skill in the 70's while the NHL just wanted to knock you on your arse.

Even though he was born in US, Dave Blatt spent over 20 years coaching abroad before he took the Cavs job, which was his first US coaching job....Igor has coached less than 10 years in Europe and most of his stops are in the US

Wait, Randolph plays for Slovenia? Wasn’t he born in Germany?
