quote:no, he got DQ'd for swimming 15% faster than HE did in his previous heat. its pretty dumb but he didnt get DQd for being faster than the other people
You get DQ for swimming 15% faster then other swimmers and get a participation ribbon.

"Apparently you can't be more than 15% faster than the time you swam in your heats just in case you are trying to swim slower in your heat to be placed in a lower division's final. "Rory swam 15.8% faster than his heat

I mean the kid seemed to comprehend that this is bullshite and smoked the compitition
Maybe he isn't really special enough for the special olympics.
Its a spectrum after all

Well apparently there is a rule stating you cannot swim 15% faster than the time you swam in your heats. The reason is to prevent people from purposely swimming slower to be placed in a lower division only to wipe away the inferior competition in the final.
Sounds like this kid tanked in the earlier races to get matched up against people he was actually much faster than so that he could win first place.

I think the rule is pretty fair. It seems like they place kids in races based on their qualifying time. So super slow kids get grouped together, which gives them a chance to still win something.
It'd be pretty fricked up if a kid loafed in order to get in a slow group and then take the gold.
If that isn't how it works....then the rule is ridiculous.

And we always hear of stories like this where there is some great injustice done and everyone is outraged. But then you look into the story more and everything seems much more reasonable.
It's almost always the case with stories like this.

"I'm the first to admit Rory can be quite lazy when it comes to training, however, he is very competitive and the minute he saw those medals he just went for it.

I was wondering if Autism is actually something that would qualify someone for the special olympics. I know that autism is an issue and there are different levels, but I'm just not sure that it's quite the same as someone with, say...down syndrome.

for a long time people though autistic people, depending on where they are on the spectrum obviously, couldnt handle sports at all. like it was too much social interaction and they wouldnt be able to deal with it

The kid is autistic and 9 years old.....do you honestly think he could comprehend the situation where he would actively think this way?

Jamaal Charles competed in the special olympics because he was really dumb as a boy. I don't want to think about how bad he smoked everyone else in any event he competed in. This guy was smoking folks on the track at Texas and he was competing against retarded kids. Gosh I bet it was brutal
