Skydive altitude record attempt - 120,000ft.

The Stratus project is sponsored by Red Bull. Altitude goal is 120K ft. Austrian, Felix Baumgartner will exit and free-fall to about 5,000 ft. He will be in free-fall for about 5.5 minutes and he will break the sound barrier before slowing his descent and opening his parachute.
The last high altitude record was set in 1960 from 102,800 ft by USAF Col. Joe Kittinger.
What a ride! I was an avid jumper for many years & this really gets the blood pumping.
Great website about the project - Stratus

That's just sick. Me and some friends from work are looking to do a jump soon. It's gonna be a lot lower than that though.

The speed of sound? The fastest that anyone has ever fallen is 321 mph and that is over half less then the speed of sound at 768 mph.
Im not calling you a liar, its just that is quite a bit of difference. More then double. Not to mention when he slows down, if he messes up and slows down too fast, he might come down in pieces.
ETA: Found someone who was able to hit 614 mph from an altitude of 102,000 feet and it says he need 5,000 more feet to break the sound barrier. So it is possible, just damn hard.

Well I know its possible. He is actually predicting at that altitude to reach speeds over Mach 1.3 which is around 1,100 mph because there is no air resistance for around the first 30,000 feet of the jump. That is stupidly fast. Just for comparison, the top speed of an F-22 fighter is 1.8 or 1,800 mph. I would shite myself.

maybe from the height, but probably not from the speed. Joe Kittenger described his jump, and said the only way he knew he was falling was his balloon was getting smaller real fast. He said it felt like he was floating.
If you're going 1,100 miles per hour and there is very little air resistance, you won't be feeling very much.

What kind of equipment do they use besides parachute? Mask, bodysuit, etc?

How big of a hole do you think he would make if his parachute doesn't open?

Sound may move slower at that altitude because the air is thinner? Dunno.

Sound does travels at 670 mph without air resistance and 714 mph with air. But they measure their speed when they have reached maximum velocity which means there is air resistance. Him jumping higher means his maximum velocity will be higher when he reaches the air because he will be going faster right before he reaches that point. So basically the point right before they start losing speed is their maximum velocity reached. Pretty cool.
