In the pre-shot interview piece they showed last night she said she used to be fearless and now she thinks about all the stuff that can go wrong.

I'm sure the pressure of having to reinvent the sport or do more ridiculous shite every time to even get your score counted can be insurmountable. Like literally almost every headline in her most recent events include the words "record breaking."

But she still just quit mid Olympics due to pressure

Yeah. That was a meltdown. No other way to put it.

While Biles has done is amazing, don't get me wrong, but a Mary Lou Retton or Nadia Comaneci would have found that extra gear when it absolutely had to be done. Once you have that crisis of confidence do you ever bounce back in a sport like gymnastics where you have to be so precise?

It has been an underwhelming Olympics for the US I think. The women's soccer team is coming off one of the great World Cup runs in history... but that was 2 years ago. They look like the original Dream Team of women's soccer who, frankly, were kept on the National Team too long. Old athletes, in a cardiovascular driven sport, can get over the hill quickly, particularly in this weather. They look over the hill.

Add to that we lost to France in Men's basketball... ouch. Got whipped by Japan in Women's Softball... ouch. Our all time great Women's Swimmer lost to her younger Aussie rival... ouch.

You don’t understand the sport of gymnastics if you think she quit.

You don’t understand sports in general if you think she didn’t quit.

Whatever you say.

At the end of the day, she made the right decision. If she had done what she did on vault again on bars or floor there’s a good chance she would have been seriously injured. Gymnastics is not a sport where you frick around. You can’t push through physical or mental issues like you can in other sports.

She was mentally incapable of performing. As in, injured.

Quitting is quitting. You can dance around it, says she was “mentally incapabale”, whatever. She quit competing and it wasn’t because of a physical injury. She was capable of continuing to compete. She chose to quit competing.

We’re just too soft these days. Call something what it really is instead of making excuses. She quit.

Absolute clown take.

At the end of the day, she was not capable of continuing to compete without risking serious injury.

I must have missed where MJ quit on his team right before a championship final that only happens every 4 years.

I must have missed where losing focus while dribbling a basketball could cause you to become paralyzed.

That’s a loser mentality. Elite athletes never believe they can’t do something. Whether you accomplish it or not, you have to have that mentality. If you give it your full effort, you won’t lose, no matter the outcome. But if you quit, not only do you lose, you also have to deal with the what if. And the what if can be worse than a loss.
