Extra mass and strength would account for more power. On average, who hits serves faster, men or women? Who hits baseballs farther, small guys or big guys. How about long drive champions? Hardest slap shots? I know there are exceptions, but more size and strength equates to more velocity in "swinging" sports. At a lighter weight, she would be quicker and get to more balls.

More muscle equals more strength and power, not more fat. Men are more powerful because they have more muscle than women, but elite male athletes tend to be leaner than elite women. Serena couldn't stay on the court with a top-ranked high school male player, not to mention college or pro. I don't know where you got the idea that excess fat gives you more strength and power.

High School player? You might be taking it a little bit too far there.

Are we seriously comparing fitness pics from a woman on a beach vacation to a contest photo from a woman who runs track and field?!?

Contest photo? Ennis had just finished running an 800 meter race in the Olympics when that picture was taken. I doubt very seriously that Cosmopolitan or any of the many other magazine covers she's been on would want that picture on their cover.

I've heard Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Mary Jo Carillo all say pretty much the same thing when it comes to the difference between men and women. Chris Evert said that she couldn't beat her brother even when she was at the height her powers and her brother never made it past college tennis. Don't ever underestimate the benefits of testosterone. John McEnroe only weighed 165 pounds when he played, but Serena would have been lucky to score point against him, much less a game.

No, I'm well aware of the difference. It's significant. You just need to more tightly define "top-ranked". Chris Evert's brother was a damn good tennis player. He had a full ride to Auburn.

For practice partners, females usually use guys that tried to play on tour but weren't good enough. That's the case with Serena. It'd actually be an interesting case study to see who the various females use as their practice partners.

There have many women who have been the #1 ranked player in the world as teenagers (Sharapova, Hingis, Graf, Seles, Austin, etc.), but that's not the case with the men. To become the most dominant player in the ATP, you've got to be a FULL-GROWN MAN. Most women reach physical maturity before they're 20, but not most men, who continue to get stronger well into their 20's.

Mary Jo Carrillo was on a panel discussion on women's sports with Robin Roberts when she said that there are hundreds of high school boys who could beat Serena Williams at her absolute peak. Of course this prompted a look of disbelief from Roberts, at which point Carrillo began bobbing her head up and down and said, "Yes, the difference between the men and the women players is that great".

a little exaggeration on the high school player part.....

i wouldn't say fat is more power, but based on the law of physics that extra weight behind it makes a difference.
like a long armed QB, which takes into account centrifugal forces....

Long arms make a difference, but not excess, non-muscle body weight. Otherwise, quarterbacks, baseball pitchers, javelin throwers and discus throwers would all trend fat.

force = mass x acceleration
that speaks for itself...

no one wants to be fat, but it does have it advantages..... look at all of the power hitters in baseball. not the roid ones.

Extra weight behind what? Does stomach fat or junk in the trunk help speed up shoulder rotation?

You have no idea how this equation works.

If this were true, all pitchers would be fat as shite. You are not a physicist. Or a golfer. Obviously.

look close at the equation bobby... not just mass is in the equation.

hitting and throwing are two different things.

Obviously this is nothing more than your own theory, but real science contradicts what you're saying. I suggest you read up more on the subject and get back to us.

you're telling me if you can generate the same amount of speed with two different weights, that it'll be the same force applied? that's not possible.

I met her at a club in LA, she was huge. Garuntee they're using but there's no proof so forget it.

I think she is probably on something as well, but only bc I think most any athlete at that level in any sport like is probably on something. Whether its to be bigger & stronger or recover faster, they all do something.

Arguing about if one specific athlete is doping is a waste of time.

I agree with this as a general principle. And while Serena has let herself go a little bit at times (see beach picture), she is far from nasty when in playing shape. If you wouldn't have sex with the female depicted below, then you're into dudes.

I think you actually posted a pic of a dude
