He should be in the race regardless, maybe even more so because of the lack of support around him.

Unfortunately, he's going through the issues of consuming 12% of their salary cap with an organization that isn't know for being very good at balancing higher priced players and the rest of the roster. They are terrible at focusing on shoring up key positions and knowing where they need to find journeymen type players to fill in.

The Patriots, Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs and Steelers have done this really well over the long-haul.

He would need to be on a more team friendly deal. I’m the biggest Burrow fan, but he’s Drew Brees 2.0. He makes too much in salary to put the right pieces around him.
Has the NFL nixed deferred deals? When the Cowboys were good, Aikman would defer some of his contract for them to be able to sign the likes of Deion and Charles Haley. The Cowboys would announce they signed someone and tell about Troy "taking a pay cut" for that season. If I remember right Aikman might have even made more money, but had to wait for it.

If the Bengals can do that, they need to as soon as free agency starts.

Shannon Sharpe was on national TV blaming Burrow for the Bengals record. What a dumbass.

Hopefully he survives long enough to get to a team with an owner that actually cares. Chase should get out of there on the first thing smoking that results in him getting paid.

Mike Brown spends as much money as every other NFL owner in regards to player salaries, contracts, etc.

There isn't really such a thing as a "cheap owner" anymore, they all make guaranteed profits thanks to the television and streaming deals. Every owner spends the entire cap with few exceptions.

Back when Archie held Eli from going to San Diego there were still franchises that lost money annually. Robert Kraft lost money his first couple years as Patriots owner and his wife considered buying the team a "mistake". Then a couple years later, the new TV deals were so huge that everything changed.

For as big of a pant-suit wearing, frosted hair tips having, fashionista weirdo he comes across off the field, Burrow is a commendable leader to his team, and seems like an all-around great locker room guy. He is a tough, throwback QB who lays it all on the line. Doesn't throw guys under the bus, or bitch and throw fits when things aren't going well for his team. Makes the whole prissy, fashion statement thing that much more mind-boggling, but its whatever, who am I to judge.
