1. Some of you are hanging Howard's strikeout numbers over his head like he can't hit or something. The man is driving in like 140 runs every year. Who gives a frick if he strikes out a lot?

2. That's a whole lot of money to be paying someone that will be as old as he will be when that contract expires.

3. This contract pretty much guarantees that Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder will be holding their teams hostage come negotiation time.

i agree with all 3 of those statements.

i think the extension is far too premature on the phils part..

and i think strikeouts.. as well as even batting average is a very over-rated stat to look at for certain hitters. the dude produces runs.. which ultimately is most important. i don't care how many k's he makes.. he still hits 40 homers a year and drives in a ton of runs.

I was just talking about this at work with a phillies fan. It looks like the the phillies front office is trying to guarantee that neither one of those guys are in the N.L. next year. They are going to be requesting North East money.

Werth keeps developing and surprising, thus Phils may keep him, despite having Dominic Brown, which is why I think they were able to sign Victorino cheap(he wanted to remain a Phil, yet knows they have a replacement if asked too much).

It's been assumed they'll let JRoll walk for bigger money. Plus, until the recent three years, he often made gestures about returning to his native Cali.

Unless Utley breaks down physically, and with Howard now locked up at fat pay, somewhere between Rollins, Victorino, Werth, definitely Ibanez gone after next year, they'll have to get younger in coming years..and Dom Brown will be in the OF soon.

You have to be really. The sad thing on your part is the whole central is terrible and the brew crew may still be with in striking distance come trade deadline.

Fielder is way too fat. Once natural youth fades, that body of his is gonna fade hard.

This isn't the same era that his daddy played in with all that lard..today's game moves much faster.

Don't see any Greg Luzinski, Bob Horner, Cecil Fielder, etc..builds anymore.

Prince, and maybe Berkman whom looks downright slender vs the aforementioned.

Today's players are great athletes, and take care of their bodies..there is too much money at stake today.

And Pilot, I agree, the year they fought him in arb, he wanted like what 10 to 13 M per..would've locked him down for half what it now is gonna cost, and the contract would already be what.. three years up the road?

just saw Lucroy last week...good player, and I like him as a hitter. Has a ways to go as a catcher but definitely has a good arm.

I can't believe they gave him 25 million a year. He is by no means a shabby hitter but giving a big guy like that a contract at age 30 just seems dangerous. His 2B numbers have improved which is good, but it just seems to happen so fast that the bigger guys just fall off so fast. Also they paid him top money in the league which is going to set a precedent. I just don't understand paying 25 million bucks for a power hitting 1B which is probably the most common position player in the league.

He's one of the most prolific run producers in the game. And he's about on equal footing with Pujols as a defender.

He's well worth the bank. Unlike a guy like Joe Mauer.

If you like a guy who hasn't produced at MVP caliber level since 2006, then yeah I guess. His BA since 06 has been: .268, .251, .279, .265 and he hovers around 200 SO's per year. And also consider he will be making $25M a year from the ages 32-37. Still think he's worth the bank?

Wow 25M a season for a player who has 200K's a year.. good going phillies.

You act like the Phillies don't know what there doing, and haven't owned the NL the last three years and will likley continue to for years to come. you also bring up strike outs but don't mention his RBI production, Ryan averages 143 RBI over the last 4 seasons,143, think about that number and find someone on your team who a produce that many runs.

Yes, and more. He is a run producer, not a for average hitter. Stats can often be overrated, batting average is one, RBI is not one, Runs wins games, and Philadelphia has won a lot of games sense Ryan Howard has joined the team. Three straight division titles two World Series appearances and a championship, all you negative guys just sound like jealous haters, who would love to have Howard on your team, and you know it.

32-35 and still productive years in baseball, And a player can still be good at 36-38. The Phillies have given no reason of the last few years to doubt there decisions. Players across the league only see a team who rewards there players and will remember that when there free agents.
