For one year. It was a terrible contract.

he gave the red sox $6 million in surplus value. sure, they probably wanted more out of him and his season wasnt as good as people were hoping. but it wasnt a "terrible" contract for one year. he gave them almost an extra win over what they bought him for

WAR/$ is such a shite stat. If you pay someone the 2nd highest AAV for any MLB player and the most total value for a pitcher contract, I need him to be a top 3 pitchers in all of baseball and he was not that .

I would contend he offered closer to fair market value than surplus. With lower contracts this offseason, there have been suggestions of the cost of a win being more like $7 million instead of $8 million.

not really. it does a good job at placing economical value on a players performance and if we want to evaluate contacts, thats where we should start

that very well may be the case. and if it is, id still argue thats not "terrible" or "horrible" or a humongous overpay

David price was not a great pitcher last year and was compensated as the 2nd highest player in baseball AAV wise. For his salary I need Kershaw level production

for his salary, you pretty much need the level of production that he gave the red sox

Like I said, for one year it is a good contract. We all knew he was overpaid and got too many years. When will teams learn that it isn't a good idea to sign a guy close to 30 for long term deals. What will his contract look like this year if he needs tommy john surgery?

people keep saying this but these contracts work out about as much as they don't

it won't look good, but this is a guy who never had issues like this before

At the highest level, there is always some value in their contract. Like I said, he was paid around fair market value last year.

Trout and Kershaw will never command $70 or $50 million AAV, respectively, even if that is what they are worth. War/$ should not be perfectly linear even though additional wins are because the market does not operate on that theoretical of a level.
