friend of mine liked to tell the story about the time he was in New York, listening to a spots talk station and a guy called in and said in a thick Noo Yawk accent about "How Fassel had some bawls to make these kinds of cawls in such cuwcial situations."

Fassel had a guy named Sean Payton as offensive coordinator/quarterback coach back then.

He also demoted Payton during the 2002 season.

And the Giants went on a tear and made the playoffs after that.

For a league that loves its retread hires, I always found it strange Fassel faded out of the league so quickly without getting another chance somewhere. He got fired as OC of the Ravens after a 13-3 season, and was done.

It gets overlooked because of the way it ended, but that Super Bowl run was impressive considering the low preseason expectations. The NFC CG was a bigger beatdown than the final score indicated.

Only 71. I would have thought he would have had a lot more life to live.

He was speaking at the NFL experience during the 01 Super Bowl. My dad told me to get in view for the camera standing next to him. I didn’t know who he was at the time.
