Remember this can't miss baseball prospect?
quote:
Rockies right-handed pitching prospect Riley Pint has retired from baseball at the age of 23, Thomas Harding of MLB.com was among those to relay.
Pint – who at times showed off triple-digit velocity – was the fourth overall pick of the Rockies in 2016, at which point outlets such as MLB.com and Baseball America ranked him as the second-best prospect in his class. BA even wrote then that Pint had a chance to turn into a Justin Verlander-type ace in a best-case scenario, though it did note that there were concerns regarding his control.

He was never labeled as such.
He was always a giant arm with control problems.
He couldn't get his control dialed in in a developmental setting with no pressure to win. He wouldn't have gotten many innings here if he couldn't throw strikes, no matter how hard he threw.
Even aside from the bonus money, going to the minors was the best option for his career.

I mean, they drafted him 4th overall so someone believed in him

Or believed in their ability to develop him.
He was never considered "can't miss."

There's no "can't miss" draft prospects in baseball. It's almost impossible to gauge how players will develop and handle tougher competition in baseball compared to other sports like basketball and football.

Just because a kid throws hard doesn't make him a pitcher. While velocity is important, if you have no control and can't develop a 2nd and 3rd pitch, your career will be like this kids. He probably had a pretty good signing bonus so hopefully he didn't blow it all.
