The Raiders’ phones have been ringing lately as NFL teams inquire about both of their starting quarterbacks. That’s the word from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, who shared the latest on Las Vegas’ quarterback situation Tuesday while appearing on NFL NOW.

“They’ve had several teams call, plenty of teams call on their quarterback,” Rapoport said. “But not just Derek Carr. Teams are interested in Derek Carr, but I know it would be incredibly expensive if the Raiders dealt him. It doesn’t sound like they’ve hung up the phone but I don’t get the sense they want to deal him either.

“Marcus Mariota is getting trade interest as well. It is possible that one Raiders quarterback is traded and it’s not Derek Carr. Because there’s legitimate and real interest in Mariota.”

ESPN Mike Reiss thinks the Patriots make sense

quote:

Tannehill model: Could Las Vegas QB Marcus Mariota be the most realistic option many are overlooking? Similar to how Ryan Tannehill found success in Tennessee, Mariota could do the same in New England. The Raiders are projected to be over the salary cap, and keeping Mariota as a backup to Derek Carr, with an $11.3 million salary-cap charge, might be a luxury they can't afford. The Raiders announced last week that No. 3 quarterback Nathan Peterman signed a one-year extension.

From this perspective, a case could be made for Mariota as the strongest possibility, based on potential availability, modest cost and upside. He has played under four coaches and five coordinators in six NFL seasons. Maybe the stability of the Belichick/Josh McDaniels pairing is a nice match for him.

He deserves another shot, now healthy. 1 year deal for a team at 10.75M is well worth it.

Definitely could start for a team and be a middle of the pack QB.

I wouldn’t hate it as a pats fan if they miss out on the top draft guys

He’d be middle of the road but that would be a large improvement.

Hate to say it but he'll be on the Patriots somehow.

He looked fantastic when he came in for Carr that one game later in the season.

I could see Bears too assuming Eagles ask for Wentz is too rich.

You gotta put him into the right system. He’s not a traditional under center Quarterback and Tennessee tried to do that with him over and over. Hopefully after seeing guys like Jackson, Mahomes, Murray, and even Russ flourish teams will cater to his skill set

Fan of his since Oregon and hope finds a good team. Maybe Washington would be a good spot

He definitely could pull on a Tannehill revival on the right team.

However, he has never been able to stay healthy. I'd stay away for that reason alone.

Mariota is a possession receiver playing QB. If you want to go 7-9, he’s your guy.

Same kind of shite was said about Tannehill - who literally was a possession receiver at one point in college

I always thought he’d be an interesting post-Brees QB in New Orleans. Not to crown him, but just to see what Payton could do with him in this bridge season when they’re too far over the cap to legitimately compete. It sounds like Payton is ready to make Jameis an offer, but this is such a crazy QB market, who knows how much he’s worth. Some teams may strike out on a couple of guys and wind up offering Jameis a multi-year deal bigger than the Saints wanna commit to. That Marietta only has 1-year left makes him intriguing.

That said, these articles are such bullshite, put out only to serve the teams who want to get out of contracts for cap reasons and perhaps grab an asset. Or agents drumming up fake interest in their client to get to a team where they may actually play.

Mariota is a former Heisman winner and 2nd overall pick. And he’s still only 27 with a reasonable contract. I’m sure a couple of teams have some interest and are doing their due diligence. But I seriously doubt the interest warrants multiple articles at this point.

The overhype for mariota is absolutely insane. He is another terrible, one read, option QB living off the days of his success in college

I watched every game he played in TN. It’s no coincidence that Corey Davis all of the sudden looks like the top ten pick he was drafted to be.

There just some mechanical stuff that Marcus that never got straightened out. He’d have occasional, great games but was consistently inconsistent over the course of his starts.

But he’s a quality dude that I’d love to be dead wrong about.

Mariota would be a decent pickup for a 4th or 5th round draft pick

He might have enough in the tank to be a decent backup

The Raiders will get more out of Mariota than Carr.

Carr is plenty good to win with. They need to fix the defense.
