It isn't a defensive switch when they bring them in on offense. Ron is going with conventional wisdom, but in this case the hitters are not equal.

But late in games he has brought Gentry in to CF, moved Hambone to LF, and taken Murph out. So it is for defensive purposes, though slightly different in this case as he actually pinch-hit Gentry for Murph.
