The Rangers rotation outside of Darvish is horrid. Unless they start winning every one run game like last year, hard to feel optimistic about their chances. If they aren't in good shape at the deadline, you have to look into moving Darvish.

Cole Hamels is now down with an injury, but the Rangers starters rank 7th in the majors in ERA. The rotation is solid, if unspectacular.

But the Rangers bullpen is comically bad. They have a 5.50 ERA, but even worse, they have TWO saves all year. They have blown 7 of 9 save chances. Their 22% conversion rate on saves is worst in the majors. Second worst? Seattle at 42%. They are twice as bad as the second wort club. With a bullpen that bad, you cannot win unless you have the 1970 Orioles rotation.

I'd start looking for trade partners for Yu now, and secure a trade by mid-June.

Is Yu a Free Agent at the end of the year?

If he is I unload him. If not keep him, unless a team makes a sweetheart of a deal with multiple prospects that are not below AA.

I think there is a lot of smoke and mirrors there though. They rank second to last in FIP.

Cashner maybe the most egregious example. He has by far the worst K-BB% among all starters, a 5.86 FIP and 6.43 xFIP, yet miraculously has a sub 3 ERA. Regression is coming, and I think it is going to be ugly.

Cashner's really the only example, and the Rangers are 0-4 in his starts, so its not like he's helping the bottom line. What's going to kill them is not regression, though Cashner clearly will see his ERA rise, but injuries. Martinez can't throw more than 6 innings. Griffin is already on the DL, and now Hamels is going there for eight weeks.

The Rangers are already down two starters, and we're only barely into May. One of their starters can't throw starter innings. So now, the rotation is down to two guys, Yu and Perez. And that will have a ripple effect as they bring up guys from the minors, putting more stress on their terrible bullpen.

Blow it all up

There is still a good young nucleus and some veteran talent. The bullpen is just atrocious and starting pitching beyond the top 3 is wildly inconsistent. JD needed to sure up the bullpen this offseason and he failed to do so.

OP: Yes, I think if the bullpen continues to be the achilles and the Rangers are out of the race around the deadline they should move Yu for some young arms they can develop into 3/4/5 starters or bullpen help for another shot at a run in 2018 and beyond.

Yes, trade him. The Rangers need a run.

Yes. Blow up all the bad contracts and vets that other teams would give up prospects for.

Trade anybody they can out of this list:
Dyson
Hamels
Darvish
Choo
Napoli
Lucroy (if he doesn't get his shite together)
Cashner

Then all the big contracts that aren't Beltre are gone.

Build around Mazara, Andrus, Odor, Gomez, and Gallo. Keep Beltre as a veteran presence and to keep the team chemistry some unless a team is ready to give up the whole farm for him. Let Profar, Rua, and Deshields get lots of game reps and have time to develop some more.

With those guys they have retained, it would not be a hard rebuilding process. Just have to find pitchers.
