Got beat by a team the committee considered to be the worst team in the playoffs and only there because they won the ACC championship which is in the bottom half of the main 4 leagues.

The ACC had 4 teams in final top 25 ranking starting at #10 and has the lowest ranked champion with the ACC champion ranked at #16.

SEC had 7 teams in final ranking with 3 teams in the top 7 and ranked above the highest ranked ACC team including 2 in top 3, and the SEC also had 6 teams ranked ahead of the ACC champion. The SEC champion is ranked #2, and the runner up is ranked #3.

SMU didn’t beat anyone in final top 25 ranking (0-2). They beat 2 teams ranked at the time of game with both dropping out of rankings at some point. Their two losses were to 16 and 17(from Big 12). SMU didn’t play the other 2 ranked ACC teams. One of their losses was to a Big 12 team which may be a weaker conference than the ACC (not sure about mid level and down teams for both).

Alabama beat the #2 team, the #15 team, and the #19 team in final top 25 rankings (3-1). They beat 3 teams ranked at the time of game with 2 still in final rankings and 1 dropping out of the rankings at some point. One of their losses was to #7 also in the SEC. Their other 2 losses were also in conference.

The other 2 main polls both ranked Bama ahead of SMU in final ranking. The committee had to ignore weak schedule, being in much weaker conference, SMU’s lack of quality wins, and one of Bama’s losses being to a team committee thinks is the 7th best team in the country and a long time conference rival to not drop SMU below bama in their final rankings.
