Purdue, at 35-9, is basically a lock to host a regional, but won’t have anywhere to play.

They don't have a field? I don't understand..

Lambert Field (Purdue's stadium) holds 1,100 people. For comparison, even UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium had a crowd of 2,613 when UCLA and LSU met in the winner's bracket of the Los Angeles Regional back in 2010. Here is the criteria for selecting regional sites:
quote:

Site Selection Criteria
[Reference: Site Selection of this handbook and Bylaw 31.1.3 in the NCAA Manual.]
Regarding the regional tournaments, with the criteria listed in Bylaw 31.1.3, the
Division I Baseball Committee also follows the additional criteria:
a. Regional competion shall take place at on-campus sites or alternative sites
approved by the baseball committee.
b. The committee shall attempt to place regional tournaments so that maximum
national balance can be obtained, preferably at least one regional in each of the
eight Division I baseball regions.
c. Prospective host institutions must submit a minimum financial guarantee of
$50,000, which shall be 75 percent of the estimated net receipts as submitted on
the hosting proposal (online proposed budget).
d. Once that guarantee is met, the committee shall consider the additional criteria as
listed in Bylaw 31.1.3.2.1.
e. Lights are highly recommended at all prospective regional sites. These lights
should meet the NCAA standards found by clicking on the “NCAA Broadcast
Manual and Policies” link at www.ncaa.com/broadcast.
f. The committee will consider previous crowd control and behavior of the
prospective host institution.

Lambert Field does not have lights, which is the main problem. Not sure if their stadium can generate enough money, either.

They are building a new stadium that is set to open for the beginning of the 2013 season.

From wiki:
quote:

Purdue is building John and Anna Margaret Ross Alexander Field, a new baseball stadium that will be ready for the 2013 season.[3] The new stadium will be located at the southwest quadrant of Cherry Lane and McCormick Road west of the existing soccer complex. The university's Board of Trustees approved funding for the stadium's construction on February 4, 2011.[4] Although it had been previously planned to open Alexander Field in the 2012 season, construction delays have caused Purdue to continue to use Lambert Field through the end of the 2012 season. At the end of the season, Lambert will be razed to allow space for additional parking for the Student Fitness and Wellness Center.

Their new stadium doesn't look like it'll hold much more than the existing one.

The current stadium has seating pretty much just around the batting circle. The new one will have seats past 1st and 3rd base on both sides, a few 2nd level bleachers behind the plate, plus a few boxes. Also, there's the hill down the 3rd base line.

To me, it looks like it'll seat a lot more.
