I just don't get why you'd want that kind of investment in the last 3-5 years of the contract.

You're looking at it wrong. It's not about those last years, it's about can he generate you the $250 million over the next 10 years. With the Rangers winning the division the last 2 years and the Angels' cross-town rivals having 2 young superstars in Kemp and Kershaw and new ownership sure to come in and inject some new life into that organization, the Angels--who lack any sort of starpower--probably felt like they needed to make a splash. Adding the best player in baseball--who is Latino like a lot of Southern Californians--seems like a pretty good way to do it. He might be worth his entire contract by year 4-5, making the last years of his contract meaningless.

Darvish is gonna cost over $100 million just to eat dinner with

Then you have to give him a contract of probably five years at $15 million a year

That's a shite ton of money for an unproven player at the MLB level

Although he's the best pitcher to come out of Japan ever, has great stuff, posted great numbers, and is young

The Rangers are obvious, but I don't think we can underestimate the impact the Dodgers had on this decision.

100 mil posting fee? I don't think it goes anywhere that high. People are going to look at the Dice-K situation and smarten up a little in my opinion. I was thinking the highest it could possibly go would be in the 60s.

They better win now because in 3 or 4 years the Angels are going to absolutely AWFUL

Trumbo will stay at 1st, Pujols to DH
Only if Pujols' elbow is still bothering him. Otherwise, Pujols is too good and too smart of a defensive player to keep him off the field.

Trumbo is gone.

As a Cards fan I HATE losing Albert and he deserves whatever he gets paid, he has been under paid compared to the market for most of his carreer.

I want the Cards to position themselves to win and siging Albert to a 10 year 200+ million deal would have hamstrung the team in 6-7 year. This is for the best for the Cardinals long term. Good luck to Pujols.

Angels biggest weak point is their bullpen. Trumbo could land them a good arm in front of Walden.

Thanks for the memories,Albert.

I wish you well and can't blame you for taking that kind of money.

Simultaneously, I think the Cards' offer was fair and I was a bit nervous about the ten years. The FO did all they could to keep him, though I think this could have been wrapped up a couple years ago.

Nobody to blame here.

It's time for the Cardinals--and us Cardinals fans--to pick up and move on into the post-Pujols era.

I will use this as my jumping off point.

Now onto the deal.

First, I am ecstatic to have AP. Anytime the best player in the league signs with your team you have to be happy.

BUT, I will say that I am not a huge amount of money and a lot of years.

However, AP can generate the Angels a ton of revenue and with a huge Latino population in SoCal I suppose that was part of the draw for both the Angels and AP.

I think that he will definitely play 1B if healthy. I think they may try and move Trumbo to 3rd and DH Morales (if healthy).

At the end of the day the Angels are a much better team with AP on it, so I am happy.

Angels To Sign C.J. Wilson
By Tim Dierkes [December 8, 2011 at 9:56am CST]
Lefty C.J. Wilson will join Albert Pujols in Los Angeles, as the Angels continue a surprising free agent spending spree. The Halos completed a deal with Wilson today, an executive who spoke to the team told Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Wilson, a 31-year-old Fountain Valley, California native, posted a 2.94 ERA, 8.3 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, 0.64 HR/9, and 49.3% groundball rate in 223 1/3 innings this year.

You're late to the party, Dean.

But... I'm glad CJ's gone. He runs out of steam rapidly. That's what happens when you go from 60-70 IP to 220+.

+ the no-trade clause.

In the short term it's brilliant, but if he starts to decline the Halos have really handcuffed themselves.

AND?

I am just MEH on CJ's signing. But, not playing in that heat during the summer will improve his performance.

Glad you are still alive, Dean.

Thought for sure we'd be reading a death by fapping obituary.
