I'm seeing more and more people complain about always seeing the same teams in the title/playoff. The usual response is, "It's always been this way," So I thought I'd compare the two most recent eras of CFB

BCS (16 seasons)

Most Title Appearances: 4 (Florida State, Oklahoma)
Most Championships: 3 (Alabama)
Most Consecutive Title Appearances: 3 (Florida State '98-'00)
Repeat Title Matchups: 0
Undefeated Power Conference Seasons before Bowls: 20 (1.25 per season)
Seasons with 3 Power Conference Undefeated before Bowls: 1
Most Consecutive SEC Titles: 1 (Numerous teams)
Most Consecutive ACC Titles: 3/9 extending back to Bowl Alliance (Florida State '92-'00)
Most Consecutive B1G Titles: 5 (Ohio State '05-'09 but two of these were shared in years that Ohio State lost to the other champion Penn State)
Most Consecutive Big XII Titles: 3 (Oklahoma '06-'08)
Most Consecutive Pac 12 Titles: 7 (USC '02-'08 but '02 was shared in a year that USC lost to the other champion Washington State)

Playoff (7 seasons)

Most Title Appearances: 5 (Alabama)
Most Championships: 3 (Alabama)
Most Consecutive Title Appearances: 4 (Alabama '15-'18)
Repeat Title Matchups: 3 (Clemson vs Alabama)
Undefeated Power Conference Seasons before Bowls: 11 (1.57 per season)
Seasons with 3 Power Conference Undefeated before Bowls: 2
Most Consecutive SEC Titles: 3 (Alabama '14-'16)
Most Consecutive ACC Titles: 6 (Clemson '15-'20)
Most Consecutive B1G Titles: 4 (Ohio State '17-'20)
Most Consecutive Big XII Titles: 6 (Oklahoma '15-'20)
Most Consecutive Pac 12 Titles: 2 (Oregon '19-'20)

These stats are meaningless. College football is about buying wins and spending more money than others. It's not about the qualify of football you play. It's about how many slack-jawed yokels who have money who write checks.

In previous years, the best team in college football often got left out because of a fluky loss or bad luck. The four team playoff has basically eliminated that occurrence. The top teams like Clemson and Bama and Ohio State could afford a loss and still get in while in previous years, they would need luck to get another shot. Pete Carroll and Bobby Bowden would have a Clemson or maybe even come close to a Bama type run if a playoff system had been in place during their time in college football.

Jeez.

LSU fans get so whiny and dramatic when they aren’t winning.

While I don't disagree with your point, on the other hand it allows Bama, OSU and Clemson to have a mulligan and they get a freebie loss each year, which is BS honestly.

the complaining was just magnified this year because in general this past year sucked for so many other reasons other than a flawed playoff system in College Football.

This is dumb.

Had they not put in the playoffs, the same teams would have been winning the championship.
Hell, it might have been worse (Ohio St doesn't win that first one).

I understand the argument of bringing the computers in the equation (explicitly), but this "playoffs lead to less parity" narrative is bullshite.

Maybe or that could be missing the outside effects of the playoff on recruiting. I don’t really know.

The playoff is more just a convenient cutoff. I could’ve done something similar with 2010s vs 2000s. The point is just college football currently is at a lower point in terms of parity.

You could also just as easily look at those stats and say it’s the same teams now as then outside of Clemson and USC
