If it is post play then it never offsets. If it occurs during the play then yes it will always offset. No shite

I honestly didn't like the call when I saw it. Pettigrew has his hand extended on the defender the entire way down the field grabbing and pushing off, and Stafford threw an awful pass. The way they handled it though was terrible and looked terribly odd.
The refs fricked it up for sure. but i think they fricked up by throwing the flag, or not throwing two to start. To call it a fix when they screwed both teams on that play from the get go is stupid

HOW LONG YOU BEEN WATCHING FOOTBALL ? Penalties always offset unless one is post play. 10 fouls vs. one is still offsetting penalties.

How long have you been watching football?? Dez Bryants foul would have been dead ball

Shite, at the rate those refs were going i am surprised we didn't see a Ref hand Dez 2 dozen roses, stop the game, and make him take a lap delivering high fives around the stadium.

There is no face guarding rule in the NFL. If a defender isn't contacting a receiver, it doesn't matter if they play the ball or not. The only time it matters is when they are playing the ball and incidental contact or hand fighting occurs, then that contact is legal. If they don't play the ball the contact is always illegal.

The contact on the play was initiated by the receiver by pulling him in and grabbing his facemask. Hitchens threw his hands up and didn't interfere with him. It shouldn't have been a flag in the first place.

Now, should they have picked it up? IMO no, picking it up after the call was BS. However you cannot say the Lions were screwed when the initial call was bullshite.

As a side, it disturbs me how both announcers AND Mike Pereira seemed oblivious to the rules there. All three were just flat out by the book wrong.

THE P.I. BEING PICKED UP WAS THE PROPER CALL, IT WAS A HORRIBLE PASS.

So, what you're saying is unless it's a perfect pass they WR could not possibly be interfered with?

Pass was ok, hit the Cowboy defender in the back, which correlates to Ebron's hands.

Yes it is. There is no face guarding in the NFL: Fact

Contact was initiated by Pettigrew with his hands to the face: fact

He never made a move to comeback through the receiver for the ball: fact

Even if it is spot on Dez should have been flagged and the Lions would have had first and ten inside the 30

We have a lot of kids on this board who have grown up only knowing a league where refs throw flags just about every time a catchable pass is thrown and a defender doesn't play the ball. This has resulted in fans across the country believing that face guarding is illegal.

What they don't realize is that the defender must still interfere in order for it to be a foul. The only time Hitchens contacted the receiver on the play was a brief grab of his right shoulder as he was being pulled in by the receiver.

The pass catcher initiated the contact, and because the defender did not interfere by definition he cannot be called for PI regardless of whether he played the ball.

Correct, Bryant should have been flagged. However players run on the field all the time after big plays (especially at the end of games) with no flags thrown. Don't act like this was a rare occurrence, every time a team clinches a game in the final minutes on a big defensive play multiple players run off the sideline to jump around and high five.

He wasn't doing this

He was lobbying for them to pick up the flag

That was a rare occurrence and should have been called

Do those players run onto the field to argue with an official?? A coach can't even legally run out onto the field to do that

Not according to the rule book. I will agree that it constitutes PI by the definition often used (incorrectly) by refs during games these days.

Roughly a third of all PI calls are just blatantly wrong according to an analysis done by PFF last year.
